Gaming Tips For Modern Day Video Gamers | lmaureen.com

To make the most of your video gaming budget, wait half a year before getting titles you want. On average, major releases hit twenty dollars within five months. At that price, you can buy three times the games you could if you got them at their launch date and price.

Don?t be shy about downloading games digitally! While this distribution channel experienced a somewhat rocky start, the kinks have been ironed out. Today, downloading your games (legally) is a much faster and more convenient way to get access to them. It?s also a great way to hang onto them; with most reputable services you?re allowed to download a game over and over again. This makes it easy to recover from a computer meltdown without fussing with a bunch of DVD-ROMs.

If you are having difficulty seeing a game while you are playing it, try adjusting the brightness setting. This should make the screen appear crisp, enhancing your gaming experience. And let?s face it, you will not achieve any kind of success if you can?t see what you are doing, so make the game work for you.

Get up and take a break during marathon gaming sessions. Just push the pause button or wait until you?ve finished a level, and then get up and walk around. Take about five to 10 minutes resting your eyes and hands, and then you can get back to the game where you left off.

Try to restrain your major gaming to only one kind of machine. Buying all the major consoles plus a gaming-worthy personal computer can cost up to thousands, just in hardware. Yet, most big titles will be available on almost all of them. Choose one platform to stick with for savings.

Invest in a rechargeable battery for your wireless gaming controller. You can buy rechargeable power supplies for any controller. If you intend to play video games regularly, you will be eating through a small fortune in the batteries used to run your controllers. A rechargeable battery can save you a lot of money in the long run.

Purchase the largest memory card possible if you are an avid gamer, to store as much information as you can on one piece of equipment. This will help keep you as organized as possible, and store all of your information on one device. Memory cards are absolutely essential, regardless of the type of game you are playing.

Avoid buying big name games near their launch dates. Waiting means that you are more likely to buy a game after a patch or two has come out to fix glaring holes and bugs that could impact your enjoyment and game play. Also keep an eye out for titles from studios that are known for good patching and support.

As we all know, video games are quite expensive. You can increase your child?s selection by organizing a video game co-op with neighbors or friends. Print out lists of what games each member has, and formulate a ?check-out? system, allowing kids to borrow a video game for a specified period of time. Make good rules and stick to them.

Play video games to help you learn. Video games are not only a lot of fun, but they can be quite educational, too. If you or someone you know is having a hard time learning some concept, look for a game that will help teach it. You will be surprised at just how much a video game can teach you.

If you have two or more kids, purchase video games that include a multi-player function. It can be a sign of bad things to come when one child keeps hogging the gaming console. By choosing multi-player games, you are getting more for your money. Not to mention, you are keeping several children entertained.

Always check reviews on video games. It is easy to see a trailer or advertisement for a game and get excited enough to run out and buy it. Unfortunately, the game may not hold the same excitement when you get it home and play it. Search online for reviews from gaming sites that can help you decide if it is the right game for you.

Hopefully, this article has shared a little bit of fresh information on the topic of video games. The audience for today?s video games is as wide as the population itself. Men, women, boys, and girls are all enjoying themselves with these electronic entertainments. The popularity of such games only continues to grow, making this kind of info ever more useful.

Ed Singer of Nanaimo should have webbed feet and gills after spending more than four months of his life underwater for decades.

The avid scuba diver has spent a minimum of 139 days underwater every year during the past 30 years as a commercial and recreational diver in the waters off Vancouver Island.

An admiration for Jacques Cousteau and his underwater documentaries and photographs piqued Singer's interest in the deep blue before he was a teenager.

At the age of 15, Singer started his diving career off the shores of Prince Rupert, where his dad worked as a commercial fishermen during the summers.

A neighbour took the teenager under his wing and introduced him to the world of commercial diving.

The sport would became his career and lifelong passion.

Singer, 45, has logged more than 5,000 commercial and recreational dives, including training thousands of scuba divers, recovering bodies and doing commercial contract work for several municipalities, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada and B.C. Ferries.

Most of all, Singer has been instrumental in helping create Nanaimo's underwater tourism industry, which attracts more than 10,000 divers every year.

Despite the fact Singer spends most of his working hours underwater, it's still his favourite place to play.

"A lot of people burn themselves out, but that part hasn't changed at all for me," said Singer, owner of Sundown Diving.

Having been exposed to art, photography, painting, architecture and design as a child growing up in a creative home, Karen Greenberg's inspiration and influence started quite early on. Karen's biggest influence however is nature - the textures, colors, sounds and glory of it.

Karen attended the American University in Washington DC, majoring in photography, where upon graduation, she became the Assistant Director of the Sander Gallery. Three years later she moved to New York City and through a fortuitous chain of events, she was given an opportunity to develop her design and art direction skills in the beauty/corporate world. After ten years in heels, she decided it was time to move on.

Karen co-founded the design firm, Greenberg Kingsley, NYC. The studio's main focus was music, entertainment and non-profit arts organizations. They designed it all - from CD covers to festival logos to brochures. Among the studio's many accolades was a Grammy? nomination for ?Best Boxed Set?, Blue Note Records 60th Anniversary. During her tenure as designer and art director, Karen became more and more interested in illustration and incorporated her self taught style into many of the studio's design projects. Little by little, she felt illustration taking her over and while she continues to work as a freelance designer and art director, she now focuses most of her attention on illustration and the challenge of staying in a perpetual state of creative evolution.

Karen currently resides in New York City where life continues to influence, inspire and amaze her on a daily basis.

Legendary US pianist diagnosed with cancer ? RT

U.S. pianist Van Cliburn (Reuters/Alexander Natruskin)

?The Texan Who Conquered Russia? Van Cliburn, who won the first Tchaikovsky Piano Competition at the height of the Cold War, has been diagnosed with advanced bone cancer.

?The 78-year-old piano legend is currently ?resting comfortably at his Texas home under excellent care, his spirits are high,? his long-time friend and publicist Mary Lou Falcone is quoted as saying.

The piano legend has played for international heads of states and for every American President since Harry Truman.

He started taking piano lessons from his mother at the age of 3. His debut with the Houston Symphony Orchestra took place when the prodigy was only 12-years-old. Cliburn studied at Juilliard, won the famed Leventritt Competition and performed with a number of orchestras across the country.

But a real breakthrough in his career came in 1958 when the 23-year-old pianist won one of the world?s most prestigious contests, the first International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow.

Since then he has sold out concerts, broke record sales and even prompted an Elvis Presley fan club to change its name to his.

Tired of years of stardom, in the late 1970s Cliburn took a sabbatical, feeling emotionally drained from endless touring. He moved from New York to Fort Worth, and has been living there ever since.

He began playing publicly again in the late 1980s. Until recently he practiced daily and performed limited engagements.

Cliburn won a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004, and was presented with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2003.

SAY IT IN SONG

Why say it when you can sing it?

Most speeches at this week's Republican National Convention are set to a particular theme for the day. "We Built It," is Tuesday's mantra, a poke at Obama's "You didn't build that line" at a July campaign event.

A convention entertainer will sing about it. Guitarist Lane Turner rehearsed his tune "I Built It" in a sparsely filled convention hall Monday.

"I built it with my own two working hands," goes the chorus. "Yeah I built it. No help from Uncle Sam."

Obama's campaign argues that his words, meant to stress the value of government in fostering infrastructure, were taken out of context.

VOIGHT ON OBAMA

The Virginia delegation served up some celebrity with its political breakfast Monday.

Jon Voight, the Academy Award-winning actor better known to today's moviegoers as the father of Angelina Jolie, joined Tagg Romney, son of the presidential candidate, to talk government spending, media coverage and President Barack Obama's record at the delegation's morning session.

Delegate Erin Smith of Leesburg, Va. , says Voight complained that the media wasn't providing balanced coverage of the two candidates. She says Voight also argued that Obama campaigned on several issues, but he has acted differently in office.

___

TEMPEST IN A TOTE BAG?

Maybe Mitt Romney assumes GOP delegates won't read all the way to page 177 of his book, "No Apology," included in their gift bags.

If they do, they'll find an uncomfortable sentence for Romney ? a sentence dropped from the paperback edition. It alludes to his push, as Massachusetts governor, to require all residents to obtain insurance as part of health care reforms.

"We can accomplish the same thing for everyone in the country, and it can be done without letting government take over health care," Romney wrote. That sounds a lot like the health care mandate in "Obamacare," which Romney now vows to undo.

In the paperback edition, the passage refers only to preventing a government takeover of health care. Publications including the Washington Examiner took note of the hardback's presence.

Of course, hardbacks make nicer gifts. And the swag bags don't include much else ? mints and sunglasses, mainly.

A CAREFUL TONE

"You can tone down the happy-days-are-here-again a bit. Maybe you don't have the biggest balloon drop in history." ? Rich Galen, veteran Republican consultant in Washington, discussing how to strike an appropriate tone at a convention that unfolds against the backdrop of a major storm.

Craig: "Qualified."

Ben: "Frugal."

Josh: "Cheap."

Matt: "Integrity."

Tagg: "Generous."

___

HURRICANE GOP?

Dorothy Crockett says she wasn't about to let Isaac, the tropical storm gaining hurricane strength, keep her from a minute of the Republican National Convention.

The Arkansas spitfire ? decked out in red, white and blue from her jacket to her earrings ? was among a couple hundred delegates who showed up for the abbreviated opening Monday despite the cancellation of the speaking schedule.

"At my age I have never experienced a hurricane," the 77-year-old from northeast Arkansas says. "The only hurricane I want to experience is the Republicans taking over the House, the Senate and the White House. This is the Republican hurricane."

? Brian Bakst ? Twitter http://twitter.com/Stowydad

___

CHOICE SEATING

Mitt Romney's adopted state of Massachusetts is rewarded at the Republican National Convention with prime seating ? just feet from where he'll accept the nomination this week. It's a rare honor for Massachusetts, a Democratic bastion used to being relegated to the back of the hall.

Kerry Healy, who served as lieutenant governor under Romney, is at the front of the front next to others who helped his rise. It reflects, Healy says, "a new thing for Massachusetts to have a Republican nominee for president. We have had plenty of the other kind."

Also in choice seats: delegates from battleground states of Virginia and Ohio as well as Romney's birth state of Michigan and vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan's home state of Wisconsin.

Sex Strike, an Effective Political Weapon | Morocco World News

By Larbi Arbaoui

Morocco World News

Tinjdad, August 28, 2012

Isabelle Ameganvi, a Togolese opposition leader, is calling on women to go on a sex strike for a full week to demand the freedom of protesters detained ahead of elections in Togo.

According to Togolese human rights groups, police arrested about 120 opposition supporters, who took to the streets in the capital Lome for weeks to protest against new electoral reforms they believe to support the side of the ruling party.

The Togolese opposition leader called for the sex strike starting from Monday, urging Togolese women to refuse having sex with their husbands for a week as a militant act to mobilize people against the ruling party.

?I am inviting all women to observe a one-week sex strike, fasting and prayers to set our arrested brothers and husbands free,? said Isabelle Ameganvi, leader of the opposition Let?s Save Togo.

The leader continued, as reported on CNN, ?So all you ladies have to keep the gate of your ?motherland? locked up to all men from Monday through to Sunday.? She went on to say ?We cannot stay hand-crossed, as our children and husbands are being kept in jail.?

A sex strike known also as sex boycott is a non violent way to protest many political issues from abstaining from sex with the other partner.

In October 1997, the chief of the military of Colombia, General Ma?uel Bonnet publicly called for a sex strike among the wives and girlfriends of the Colombian left-wing guerrillas as part of strategy to achieve cease-fire.

In the Philippines, during the summer of 2011, women in rural Mindanao imposed a several week long sex strike in an attempt to end fighting between their two villages.

Powerful Ways To Use An Autoresponder | Home Business Work

Autoresponders have been used by internet marketers for quite a while now. These simple software programs take care of all your email marketing tasks by automating the whole process. New internet marketers should realize just how powerful autoresponders can be when it comes to expanding an online business. The best part about using an autoresponder is that you?re not limited in any way. You can use it in a number of creative ways to get the most out of your email marketing. In fact, once you start using this simple method, you will see your sales grow and you?ll get more conversions too. The techniques you?re about to read about will give you the creative ideas you need to get everything you can from your autoresponder.

One of the most effective ways to use an autoresponder is to offer high quality information in the form of an e-seminar or course.

Most people are more than willing to take a course if it teaches them a useful skill, and your e-course will offer everything one step at a time. You can actually form your e-course so that your subscribers feel as though they are getting the ultimate value out of it by the time it?s over. The idea is to give your subscribers new and innovative ways to solve their problems and to do it in a step by step e-course that?s distributed at regular intervals by an autoresponder. We understand very well that se-nukexcr.com is nothing new within the world of internet marketing and business. There is never anything wrong with testing out something you have just read about, and very often you will discover that you have been overlooking something potentially profitable. Some people will instantly dismiss a new marketing method for whatever reason, and they are the people who get stuck with average or poor results. You can ask your self a million questions all day long, but in the end you just have to find out for yourself about their value and utility. Do not forget the one thing we always like to beat to death, and that is getting sufficient amounts of relevant information so you can use a method with intelligence. It can get a little nerve wracking when you want to do something you have never tried before and are really feeling hesitant to squeeze the trigger on it. Have a positive perspective on all you do, and that will contribute to the energy you put toward anything new.

You will also be able to send out targeted free reports. People have no problem downloading a report that?s free and that provides information they can put to use right away. Your report should be around ten or fifteen pounds and it should be filled with techniques your prospects can use. First ask for their email address if they haven?t already given it up and give them an opener report, and then when they opt-in, you can then give them the rest of the report through an autoresponder service. These reports can easily spread around when your subscribers give them away to their friends and website visitors, which will automatically bring you viral traffic. The more reports you offer to your subscribers, the more traffic you?ll experience overall.

Your autoresponder can also be used to help you advertise. For example, you could sell advertising on your site or in your ezine. You might let your subscribers know when your rates change or anything else you feel is pertinent. Usually, after a while, internet marketers will boost the price they charge for ad space, and instead of sending out emails one by one, the autoresponder can let everyone know of your price change automatically.

You should now see just how effective autoresponders are at making email marketing very successful. But if you aren?t consistent with the actions you take, then you won?t get the results you?re after. In simpler terms, if you want great results, then you will have to apply the things you have just learned about.

You?ll get better as you go on. You will become more and more experienced, and this will give you what you need to succeed. Email marketing isn?t difficult, as long as you are consistent, you will see results.

Small crowds attend Republican convention protests

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Protesters blamed Tropical Storm Isaac and a massive police presence Monday for their weak showing at the Republican National Convention. Only a fraction of the 5,000 expected demonstrators actually turned out to criticize the GOP's economic and social policies.

Hundreds of police officers and heavily armed members of the Florida National Guard patrolled the streets of downtown Tampa. The protesters were required to conduct their rallies and parades in designated areas and along specified routes, none closer than about a half-mile from where Republicans would be gathering.

"They've militarized Tampa. The chilling effect has succeeded," said Cara Jennings, a voter outreach organizer from Palm Beach County.

About 200 people were marching as part of the Coalition to March on the RNC's rally in an empty lot near the arena where the Republicans will be nominating Mitt Romney as their candidate for president. Sporadic heavy rain lashed the city and winds were gusting at 35 mph as Isaac passed to the west of Tampa in the Gulf of Mexico. The Republicans themselves had cancelled most of their Monday activities because of the storm.

The 60 organizing groups included labor unions, Students for a Democratic Society, Veterans for Peace, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, Occupy Wall Street and Code Pink.

Florida labor organizer Jose Soto said 16 buses of protesters from New York, Miami and the Florida Panhandle canceled because of the storm. He said the bus companies didn't want their equipment and drivers headed into possible problems.

"It's a calamity but all the people here are delegates for those who can't be here," said Soto of the University of Florida's Graduate Assistants United local.

Protester Mick Kelly of Minneapolis said the organizing groups were carrying on with the planned march, saying U.S. politics are dominated by the richest 1 percent.

"We demand and we will fight for good jobs," he said.

Jennings, who wore a pink, neck-to-knees vagina outfit decorated with sparkles, said she was protesting the GOP's position against abortion rights.

"The right-wing agenda is turning back time regarding women's bodies," she said.

Cheri Honkala, the Green Party's vice presidential candidate, told the crowd that, "On Election Day, we need to occupy the ballots." She said more women need to be involved in the nation's leadership.

"It's time for the men to move over. It's time for the mommas to right the wrongs," she said.

Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn, a Democrat, said the protesters had been given additional space and access to toilets and water.

"We are being supportive of people who want to come and want to offer an alternative opinion," Buckhorn said.

But he said that police planned to respond quickly if groups broke off from protesters and were intent on damaging and destroying property.

"We want folks to know that we are here to help, but we are also here to stop you if you choose to do anything to the contrary of what we expect," Buckhorn said.

Apple wins software and design patent judgements against most Samsung devices in trial over iPhone and iPad

Today, the jury reached a verdict in the Apple v. Samsung case.?Bloomberg?was the first to report that the jury had finished deliberating far earlier than anyone anticipated.?The Verge had an excellent liveblog of the verdict up and running.

The verdict was a nearly complete landslide victory against Samsung for Apple. The jury voted that nearly every one of Samsung?s devices infringed on Apple patents aside from its tablets. There were many individual devices that escaped judgement on one patent or another, but almost every one of Apple?s utility and design claims scored some kind of mark.?The verdict was reached at 2:35PM today.

Apple?s software claims on the home screen and other touch actions were also big winners today, as was its trade dress.?Decisions?over dress, the ?look and feel? portion of Apple?s claims, ?hit on nearly every Samsung device outside of the Samsung Galaxy Tab models.

Everything wasn?t roses though, as Apple was unable to prove any of Samsung?s counter-claimed patents invalid. But it did escape infringement on?any of them, even basic 3G patents.

Software patents

Apple?s software patents were the first to be ruled on.?The jury ruled for Apple in the case of all Samsung products involved in the case, stating that they were infringing on Apple?s software design patent ?381, the ?bounce back? action.

The jury ruled for Apple in the case of many, but not all, of Samsung?s products infringing on Apple?s software patent ?915, a zooming and scrolling (think pinch-to-zoom) patent. Only three devices, including the Intercept and Replenish were exempt.

The jury also ruled for Apple on the ?163 patent (double tap to zoom), saying that Samsung infringed on all but 8 phones and tablets.?On the question ?did Samsung induce its U.S. counterpart into infringing the patents,? the jury returned in the affirmative an almost all counts.?On the ?381 patent, all Samsung devices were found for inducement. On the ?915 patent, all Samsung devices but the Replenish were found for inducement.

That last question is all about damages, did Samsung willfully copy the software design of Apple?s devices.

Design patents

Next up were Apple?s design patents related to the front and back of the iPhone and the overall design of the iPad.

For the infringement of the D?677 patent, covering the front face of the iPhone, Samsung was found to infringe on all devices aside from the Ace.?On the D?087 patent, relating to the back of the iPhone, all Samsung devices aside from the S 4G and Vibrant only were found to infringe.

On the D?305 patent, all Samsung devices were found to infringe. That?s the design of Apple?s?iOS icons. The jury also felt that Samsung should have known that the icons were being copied.

Samsung also failed to prove Apple?s patents invalid, across the board.

Samsung did get a slight break with the ?889 patent for the iPad?s design, neither Galaxy Tab models were found to be?willful?infringement. That?s the one?for ?clean front, edge-to-edge glass, thin bezel, thin outer border, and rounded corners of a tablet?.

Samsung got nailed on many other devices for inducement, only the tablets were spared really. All patents but D?087 and D?889 were proven to be willfully infringed by Samsung.

Trade Dress

Samsung could not prove that the ?893 trade dress on the iPhone 3G was not protectable.?The iPhone 3G trade dress was found to be diluted by many of Samsung?s products, despite not being registered. Only the Captivate, Charge, Epic 4G, Galaxy S 2, Skyrocket, Infuse and Epic 4G touch were found not to dilute the 3G?s trade dress.

The Galaxy S 4G, one of Samsung?s flagship devices, was found to dilute the trade dress of the iPhone 3G, cranking up the damages numbers quite a bit.

Damages

Samsung was found to owe Apple $1,049,343,540 in damages over trade dress and patent violations for iPhone and iPad. The damages were spread out over all of the various Samsung devices. The findings of willfulness in the court definitely drove up the cost.

Samsung?s claims against Apple

Samsung also claimed a series of its holdings including the ?711, ?893, ?460, ?516 patents against Apple?s various devices. Not a single one of Samsung?s patents were found to be infringed by Apple, though Apple was unable to prove their invalidity.

Problems with the verdict

Judge Lucy Koh found a couple of problems with the verdict card after the announcement was read. For one, the D?889 patent was not found to be diluted, induced or infringed by the Galaxy Tab 10.1 4G LTE, though over $200k in damages was awarded for that device.

The Intercept was accused of?infringing of the D?915 patent, but the jury found that it did not on any counts. Yet they still awarded $2.2M in damages over inducement. Since you can?t very well induce someone to infringe on a patent that they, well, didn?t infringe on then that?s a problem.

The jury was asked to head back into their deliberation room to go over that form. they returned and noted the Galaxy Tab 10.1 4G LTE damages were now $0. The same went for the Intercept, which was noted not to have infringed on the ?915 patent. So that reduced the total damages that Samsung was liable for by about $2.4M.

The story so far

The consensus about the verdict is that it was reached mighty quick. There were 30 different judgements to be made with over 700 sub-arguments and this feels really, really sudden. It seems almost unfathomable that the jury has had the time ? ?just about two days ? to dissect each of these points in turn. That likely means that it was able to reach a broadly applicable decision based on the overall impression given by the two parties in the trial.

Although it?s likely that there will be appeals, they will be on technical matters as the lawyers attempt to knead and shape the impact of the outcome to their companies? business over the coming decade.

Apple recently got a split decision in a Korean court over whether two of its patents were infringed by Samsung. That case, though partially awarded to Samsung, was not thought to have a large impact on the its battles elsewhere. That?s not the case for the U.S. trial, which is expected to set at least some legal?precedent, no matter which way it has been decided.

Apple and Samsung react

Apple issued a statement to The New York Times, obviously very pleased with the verdict:

We are grateful to the jury for their service and for investing the time to listen to our story and we were thrilled to be able to finally tell it. The mountain of evidence presented during the trial showed that Samsung?s copying went far deeper than even we knew. The lawsuits between Apple and Samsung were about much more than patents or money. They were about values. At Apple, we value originality and innovation and pour our lives into making the best products on earth. We make these products to delight our customers, not for our competitors to flagrantly copy. We applaud the court for finding Samsung?s behavior willful and for sending a loud and clear message that stealing isn?t right.

Samsung says that today?s verdict should be viewed as a loss for the American consumer:

Today?s verdict should not be viewed as a win for Apple, but as a loss for the American consumer. It will lead to fewer choices, less innovation, and potentially higher prices. It is unfortunate that patent law can be manipulated to give one company a monopoly over rectangles with rounded corners, or technology that is being improved every day by Samsung and other companies. Consumers have the right to choices, and they know what they are buying when they purchase Samsung products. This is not the final word in this case or in battles being waged in courts and tribunals around the world, some of which have already rejected many of Apple?s claims. Samsung will continue to innovate and offer choices for the consumer.

Steve Jobs? war

?I will spend my last dying breath if I need to, and I will spend every penny of Apple?s $40 billion in the bank, to right this wrong,? Apple founder Steve Jobs told his biographer, Walter Isaacson.??I?m going to destroy Android, because it?s a stolen product. I?m willing to go to thermonuclear war on this.?

Jobs was famously vocal about his hatred of the way that he?perceived?Android to have ripped off the iPhone, especially in software design. Battles like Apple v. Samsung have been seen as parts of a proxy war that Apple continues to wage against Google.

?Our lawsuit is saying, ?Google you f*ing ripped off the iPhone, wholesale ripped us off,?? Jobs told Isaacson. ?I will spend my last dying breath if I need to, and I will spend every penny of Apple?s $40 billion in the bank to right this wrong. I?m going to destroy Android, because it?s a stolen product.?

Jobs reportedly told Google?s Eric Schmidt, ?I don?t want your money. If you offer me $5 billion, I don?t want it. I?ve got plenty of money. I want you to stop using our ideas in Android, that?s all I want.?

Though many of the decisions made today are focused on the design of Samsung?s products, several of Apple?s software patents that were proven to be potent weapons, like double-tap-to-zoom, bounce scrolling and even the design of the iOS home screen are used Android-wide. This could potentially cause problems for Google and for other partners in the ecosystem. It?s definitely not a step backwards for Apple, though it is a step sideways for Samsung and perhaps even a chink in Android?s armor that Apple could potentially hammer away at.

This NOAA satellite image taken Thursday, Aug. 23, 2012 at 1:45 a.m. EDT shows Tropical Storm Isaac spinning over the eastern Caribbean Sea. The system is now about 265 miles southeast of San Juan, Puerto Rico with maximum winds up to 45 mph. A Hurricane Warning is in effect for Haiti and the Dominican Republic and a Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for most of the Caribbean Islands. The forecast storm track takes Isaac over Hispaniola and Cuba through the weekend. To the north, a frontal boundary lingers over the Southeast and Gulf of Mexico and produces more heavy rains and strong thunderstorms. In the Plains, a trough of low pressure pushes a front through the Upper Midwest and kicks up some widespread thunderstorm activity. A few of these storms may turn severe with strong winds and large hail. (AP PHOTO/WEATHER UNDERGROUND)

Map locates Tropical Storm Isaac and its projected path for the next five days

(AP) ? Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands braced for torrential rains on Thursday as Tropical Storm Isaac whipped up waves as high as 10 feet (3 meters) in the Caribbean and threatened to become a hurricane that could take a shot at Florida just as Republicans gather for their national convention.

Some flooding was reported in eastern and southern regions of Puerto Rico as the storm approached.

U.S. forecasters said Isaac will likely turn into a Category 1 hurricane by Friday as it nears the Dominican Republic and Haiti. It was expected to weaken a little while heading over their island and the eastern two-thirds of Cuba.

The storm was projected to head toward Florida as a hurricane by Monday, but the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said some forecast models show it could go further west into the Gulf of Mexico, so "significant uncertainty remains about the threat Isaac poses to Florida."

Isaac was centered 165 miles (255) kilometers south of Puerto Rico early Thursday afternoon, with maximum sustained winds of 40 mph (65 kph). It was moving west at 15 mph (24 kph) according to the Hurricane Center.

Puerto Rico opened 428 shelters, and 50 people had taken refuge, said Gov. Luis Fortuno. Some 7,800 people were without power and more than 3,000 without water.

Schools and government offices remained closed Thursday on the U.S. territory, but the governor said it was safe for people to go to work if they needed to. However, he warned everyone to stay away from beaches and swollen rivers.

"It's not the day to participate in recreational activities in these areas," Fortuno said.

Jose Alberto Melendez, 51, disregarded that advice, coming to a beach near Old San Juan.

"It's my birthday," he said. "I had already planned to come to the beach."

He unfolded his chair and turned on the radio just as a squall approached, sending him running for shelter.

While Isaac itself has caused no reported injuries or deaths, police in Puerto Rico say a 75-year-old woman died near the capital of San Juan on Wednesday when she fell off a balcony while filling a drum with water in preparation for the storm.

Puerto Rico's main international airport remained open, but Cape Air and American Eagle cancelled their flights Thursday, Fortuno said. Ferry service to the tourist islands of Vieques and Culebra also was suspended.

In Vieques, one of the owners of Bananas Guesthouse said his brother had called from Florida and suggested he tell reporters "there are mudslides and cows flying through the air. But in fact, there's a breeze going by," Glenn Curry said. "We've had a little bit of rain. Nothing much has happened so far ... Overnight it didn't even blow enough to wake me up."

In the U.S. Virgin Islands town of Christiansted, streets lined with historic buildings of Danish architecture, were largely deserted. All but a small handful of businesses and government offices were closed. Hurricane shutters covered the entrances to most buildings and sandbags were stacked in anticipation of potential floods and storm surge.

In St. Croix, the owners of Turtle's, a seaside restaurant, were baking bread for sandwiches, selling coffee and snacks to the few passersby and fielding calls from people about the weather.

"Yes, we're open," Mary Scribner said cheerily. "No, it's not raining!"

The Scribners pulled out sandbags in case the predicted storm surge or flooding impacted their business, but by midmorning, the sandbags still sat in a pile in the corner.

The storm already forced military authorities at the U.S. base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to cancel pretrial hearings for five prisoners charged in the Sept. 11 attacks. They also were evacuating about 200 people, including legal teams and relatives of Sept. 11 victims.

Isaac also posed a threat to next week's Republican National Convention in Tampa, where 70,000 delegates, journalists and protesters are expected to descend on the city.

Convention CEO William Harris said Thursday he was working with Mitt Romney's presidential campaign and the National Weather Service to track the storm, and he said Florida officials have assured planners they have enough resources to respond to the storm should it make landfall.

But Hillsborough County Sheriff David Gee said some outside agencies that had planned to send officers to help with convention security might be forced to keep them home to deal with a storm.

"My primary concern right now is that we will lose resources," he said

In the Dominican Republic, meanwhile authorities began to evacuate people living in low-lying areas but encountered some resistance.

"Nobody wants to leave their homes for fear they'll get robbed," said Francisco Mateo, community leader of the impoverished La Cienaga neighborhood in Santo Domingo.

Businesses and schools were reopening in islands such as St. Kitts and Dominica following the storm's passage late Wednesday.

"Dominica has been spared the full brunt of Tropical Storm Isaac," said Disaster Coordinator Don Coriette. "We want to thank the almighty God for that."

Meanwhile, another tropical storm, Joyce, formed over the open water of the eastern Atlantic. Forecasters said it does not pose an immediate threat to land. The Hurricane Center in Miami said Thursday the storm has maximum sustained winds of 40 miles per hour (65 kph). Little change in strength was expected in the next 48 hours.

AP-GfK poll shows White House race still tight

WASHINGTON (AP) ? For all the attention it got, Republican Mitt Romney's selection of Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin as his running mate has not altered the race against President Barack Obama. The campaign remains neck and neck with less than three months to go, a new AP-GfK poll shows.

Overall, 47 percent of registered voters said they planned to back Obama and Vice President Joe Biden in November, while 46 percent favored Romney and Ryan. That's not much changed from a June AP-GfK survey, when the split was 47 percent for the president to 44 percent for Romney.

At the same time, there's a far wider gap when people were asked who they thought would win. Some 58 percent of adults said they expected Obama to be re-elected, while just 32 percent said they thought he'd be voted out of office. Majorities say they expect Obama to win regardless of their level of interest in the campaign.

Yet while partisans generally expect their own candidate to win, Republicans are less sure about Romney than Democrats are about Obama ? 83 percent of Democrats say Obama will be re-elected while 57 percent of Republicans think he'll be voted out of office.

One such Republican, 78-year-old Catherine Shappard of Dallas, said she's been alarmed to see even conservative commentators warning that Obama has a good shot at re-election.

"I think it's close," Shappard said. "A lot closer than I'd like it to be."

After just over a week on the campaign trail, Ryan has a 38 percent favorable rating among adults, while 34 percent see him unfavorably. Among registered voters, his numbers are slightly better ? 40 percent favorable to 34 percent unfavorable. Ryan remains unknown to about a quarter of voters.

Romney put the 42-year-old conservative chairman of the House Budget Committee on the ticket Aug. 11. The AP-GfK Poll was conducted Aug. 16-20.

Romney and Ryan will be crowned as the GOP presidential and vice presidential nominees next week at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla. The Democrats hold their convention the following week in Charlotte, N.C.

The closely locked contest reflects deep partisan divisions across the country.

Among true independents, those who say they do not lean toward either party, the share of undecided voters is declining, with each candidate picking up new support at about the same pace. However, Romney maintains a small advantage with the group, with the backing of 41 percent of independents to Obama's 30 percent. Some 21 percent still say they support neither candidate.

Among all voters, 23 percent are undecided or say they have not yet committed to their candidate.

One independent voter, Frank Nugent, a 76-year-old retired sales manager from Pittsburg, Calif., said he always gives both parties a chance to win him over ? but not this time.

"Considering what the opposition is like, I can do nothing else but vote for Obama," he said. Part of his dislike for the GOP ticket is due to Ryan, he said, describing Romney's ticket mate as "further right that the bulk of the Republican Party." But while he'll vote for Obama, Nugent said he's disappointed in Obama's record.

Robert Hamrick, 39, from Cedartown, Ga., is going the other way. Although a registered Democrat, he plans to vote for the Romney-Ryan ticket, claiming Obama has been deceptive and failed to make good on his promises on the economy, jobs and government debt.

As for Ryan, Hamrick said: "He's very smart. He knows his stuff. He knows the finance. He can take apart Obamacare with ease." Hamrick is a former nursing home manager who left his job about four years ago in hopes of finding one with more security ? and has been mostly unemployed ever since.

The frail economy, with the unemployment rate hovering at 8.3 percent more than three years after the deep recession officially ended, remains the No. 1 issue. Nine in 10 call it important for them and half of voters say it is "extremely important," outpacing all other issues tested by at least 10 percentage points. Two-thirds in the poll described the economy as poor.

Registered voters split about evenly between the two candidates on whom they'd trust more to handle the economy, with 48 percent favoring Romney and 44 percent Obama. They are also about evenly divided on who would do more to create jobs, 47 percent for Romney to 43 percent for Obama. Among independent voters, Romney has a big lead over the president on handling the economy ? 46 percent to 27 percent.

Romney often appeals to his business background as proof that he could better manage the federal government, and the poll finds that overall, voters are more apt to trust him to handle the federal budget deficit over Obama, by a 50 percent to 40 percent margin.

But it's unlikely that Ryan's background in authoring Republican budgets will boost them as an issue in the campaign. The share of adults saying the budget deficit was deeply important to them dropped from 75 percent in February to 69 percent in the new poll.

Among those who rate the economy as the top concern is Mattise Fraser, a 52-year-old Democrat whose hometown of Charlotte is gearing up for the Democratic gathering. "We're in a crisis situation now," said Fraser, who said she plans to vote for Obama. She says she's a homemaker ? but not by choice. "The economy is crazy. There's no jobs."

Obama holds a clear edge among voters on handling social issues such as abortion, 52 percent to 35 percent, and a narrow one on handling Medicare, 48 percent to 42 percent. Medicare has grabbed a lot of attention as an issue lately, with Ryan's proposals to partly change the program drawing criticism from Obama and other Democrats.

Of those who said Medicare is an extremely important issue, 49 percent say they plan to vote for Obama and 44 percent for Romney.

Obama's approval rating held steady at about an even split, with 49 percent saying they approve of the way he's handling his job and another 49 percent saying they disapprove.

The president remains more positively viewed than Romney, and continues to be seen as more empathetic. Some 53 percent of adults hold a "favorable" opinion of the president, compared with just 44 percent who view Romney favorably. Obama also held a commanding lead among voters as the candidate who better "understands the problems of people like you," 51 percent to 36 percent for Romney. Some 50 percent see him as a stronger leader than Romney; 41 percent see Romney as stronger.

Michelle Obama remains more popular than her husband. Sixty-four percent of adults view her favorably and just 26 percent unfavorably, although that's down from 70 percent favorable in May. Ann Romney's favorable rating is mostly unchanged since May, with 40 percent viewing her favorably, 27 percent unfavorably and nearly a third declining to say.

Thirty-five percent overall say things in the nation are heading in the "right direction," up from 31 percent in June.

Melinda Cody, a 45-year-old undecided voter in San Diego, sees positives and negatives with both candidates ? and says she'll vote for the candidate who does the least bullying. "When they just run a negative campaign, it backfires," she said.

The poll involved landline and cell phone interviews with 1,006 adults nationwide, including 885 registered voters. Results for the full sample have a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.9, while it's 4.1 points for registered voters.

Phone Pay Plus Compliance for 0871 Numbers | communication ...

Filed Under Category communication skills workplace by admin

If you are looking to use 0871 telephone numbers for your business communications then you need to be aware of the rules for pricing and call times enforced by the business number telecoms regulator PhonePay Plus (PPP). This article will give you a brief overview of the issues involved in 0871 premium rate number compliance. If you are in any doubt as to how to follow the guidelines or need further advice before you set up your new numbers then you can either speak to 08UK or consult the PhonePay Plus website for more information.

0871 numbers ? written pricing information

The first thing you need to know is that you have a legal obligation to let the caller know the cost of the call per minute before they dial ? this should appear on any literature, advertising, online and anywhere else that you display your business phone number. This may also include providing verbal pricing information where applicable in mediums such as television or radio advertising.

0871 Numbers ? call welcome messages

Your 0871 phone number call welcome messages should give out the cost of the call per minute at the start of the call.

For both of the above you should give the BT landline price and warn callers that costs from other networks and from mobiles might be higher.

0871 numbers ? call waiting time

Call waiting times should be kept to an absolute minimum and there should be no undue delays caused by your messaging options. Call queuing is usually forbidden for 0871 numbers and permission can only be granted for this by PhonePay Plus themselves.

This is just a rough outline of the issues that you need to take into consideration and 08UK are there to help you to set up your new 0871 numbers to help you to be PPP compliant when setting up your new business telephone numbers.

Shock Poll: Obama Could Lose Illinois - Yeshiva World News

President Barack Obama could lose his home state of Illinois in November, a new poll shows.

A poll conducted by Illinois-based pollster and political strategist Michael McKeon found Obama leading Republican Mitt Romney by 49 percent to 37 percent in Cook County, the home of Chicago. That puts him ahead by a far thinner margin than expected in a county he should be winning handsomely.

Cook is the most Democratic leaning county in the state. It is also the most populous.

Those numbers do not bode well for the president.

?He has to come out of Cook County with a big lead or he?s gonna have problems downstate,? explained McKeon, who said that based on the numbers he had seen, Obama polled only in the forties in downstate Illinois.

?It?s not like his policies are very popular downstate,? McKeon said. ?He?s viewed as more part of Chicago than he is part of Illinois.?

According to the poll, which surveyed 629 registered voters last week, Obama?s problems are not in Chicago proper, but in suburban Cook County.
