The 10th-annual "In The Pink" Tennis Tournament was held at eight different clubs throughout the area on Saturday, attracting more than 200 players decked out in everything pink. It raises money for Marianne's Room at Martha Jefferson Hospital.
Marianne's Room was created in 2002 in memory of Marianne Zirkle. The Women's Committee at Martha Jefferson Hospital is dedicated to raising awareness for breast cancer and through the Marianne's Room foundation they provide free wigs, hats, scarves and makeovers for patients who are going through chemotherapy.
"It's really beautiful to drive into these tennis facilities and look onto the courts and see pink everywhere - pink tennis balls, shirts, shorts, shoes, pink hair, pink hats," In The Pink Chairperson, Brenda Myers, said. "I get, I guess, that tingling feeling you get when you walk into a place where something really amazing is happening.
i did know Marianne Zirkle, so when the family decided to establish Marianne's Room in her memory, it was an easy cause for all of us to join in on," Winifred Wegmann, who has played in all 10 tournaments said.
Wegmann still plays for Marianne and for all the women who are touched by the services Marianne's Room provides.
Myers says sadly everyone is touched by cancer somehow.
"My mom is a breast cancer survivor, so it's always been very near and dear to my heart," she said. "I've also had several friends who have had breast cancer. Some have survived and some have not, so just knowing that this event is going on and it's trying to help people," Myers said.
The tennis tournament raised more than $32,000 for Marianne's Room.
