Just as with any business, social media is important to dental practices. But terms such as social media and related words are still confusing to many dentists. Therefore, we thought we would put together a short dictionary to help explain 25 important terms that you need to know if you plan to market your dental practice online.

These have been collected from a variety of sources across the World Wide Web including Webopedia, Wikipedia, dictionary.reference.com, techterms.com, and others.

Algorithm: A set of formulas developed for a computer to perform a specific function. For instance, search engines such as Google and Bing have algorithms that direct how they conduct searches on the internet.

Avatar: A graphical representation of an online user used within forums and social networks.

Blog: An abbreviation of ?web log.? The person who writes a blog is known as a blogger.

Bookmarking: Just like when you place a bookmark in a book. Online you?re simply marking a web page you want to find easily later.

Circles: The group of people you choose to associate with on Google+.

Content: The presentation of information in any visual or audio form to gain an audience to your website.

Domain name: Technically, it?s an identification string. In simple terms, it is the address to your website that generally looks like www.yournamehere.com or .net, .gov, or any other available ending.

Forums: Sometimes referred to as a message board, a forum is an online discussion site.

HTML: Hypertext Markup Language is a programing language used to write web pages.

Instant messaging: Known as IMing, it is the exchange of real-time, typed, electronic messages between two or more people.

Keywords: Important words or phrases that describe your content, and used as search terms for search engines to identify content on your website.

Links/backlinks: In general, a link generally appears as a highlighted word or phrase on a web page (such as the word ?post? above). By clicking on it, you jump to another web page. A backlink is a link coming from another webpage to your own.

Podcast: Like a broadcast for television or radio. A series of digital media files, either audio or video, usually part of a series and often downloaded through an RSS feed.

RSS feed: Really Simple Syndication is a system to deliver content like a wire service.

Search engine: Programs such as Google and Bing that search documents for specific keywords and return a list of the documents where these keywords are found.

Search engine optimization: Known as SEO. It increases the amount of visitors to your website by using keywords in your content to gain a high-ranking placement in search engine results.

Skype: A free program that allows for text, audio, and video chats between users.

Social media: Online communities, such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Twitter, and YouTube, that share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content such as videos.

Unified Resource Language: URL for short. A web address where you can find a file, directory, or website.

Web analytics: The measurement, collection, analysis, and reporting of internet data for purposes of understanding and optimizing web usage. This is important information for tracking visitors to your website.

Web page: A document on the World Wide Web with a unique URL.

Website: A connected group of web pages belonging to a single entity such as your dental practice.

WordPress: A content management system that allows users to host and publish blogs.

World Wide Web: A term sometimes used interchangeably with Internet. However, www and internet are not the same things. Learn more here.
