2012 Mayan apocalypse rumors have dark side, NASA warns

NASA scientists took time on Wednesday (Nov. 28) to soothe 2012 doomsday fears, warning against the dark side of Mayan apocalypse rumors ? frightened children and suicidal teens who truly fear the world may come to an end Dec. 21.

These fears are based on misinterpretations of the Mayan calendar. On the 21st, the date of the winter solstice, a calendar cycle called the 13th b'ak'tun comes to an end. Although Maya scholars agree that the ancient Maya would not have seen this day as apocalyptic, rumors have spread that a cosmic event may end life on Earth on that day.

Thus NASA's involvement. The space agency maintains a 2012 information page debunking popular Mayan apocalypse rumors, such as the idea that a rogue planet will hit Earth on Dec. 21, killing everyone. (In fact, astronomers are quite good at detecting near-Earth objects, and any wandering planet scheduled to collide with Earth in three weeks would be the brightest object in the sky behind the sun and moon by now.)

"There is no true issue here," David Morrison, an astrobiologist at NASA Ames Research Center, said during a NASA Google+ Hangout event today (Nov. 28). "This is just a manufactured fantasy." [End of the World? Top Doomsday Fears]

Real-world consequences

Unfortunately, Morrison said, the fantasy has real-life consequences. As one of NASA's prominent speakers on 2012 doomsday myths, Morrison said, he receives many emails and letters from worried citizens, particularly young people. Some say they can't eat, or are too worried to sleep, Morrison said. Others say they're suicidal.

"While this is a joke to some people and a mystery to others, there is a core of people who are truly concerned," he said.

Not every 2012 apocalypse believer thinks the world will end on Dec. 21. Some, inspired by New Age philosophies, expect a day of universal peace and spiritual transformation. But it's impressionable kids who have NASA officials worried.

"I think it's evil for people to propagate rumors on the Internet to frighten children," Morrison said.

Myths and misconceptions

NASA scientists took questions via social media in the hour-long video chat, debunking doomsday myths from the rogue planet Nibiru to the danger of killer solar flares.

In fact, said NASA heliophysicist Lika Guhathakurta, it's true that the sun is currently in an active phase of its cycle, meaning electromagnetic energy has picked up. Large solar flares can impact electronics and navigation systems on Earth, but satellites monitoring the sun give plenty of warning and allow officials to compensate for the extra electromagnetic activity when it hits our atmosphere. What's more, Guhathakurta said, this particular solar maximum is the "wimpiest" in some time ? scientists have no reason to expect solar storms beyond what our planet has weathered in the past.

Nor are any near-Earth objects, planetary or otherwise, threatening to slam into our planet on Dec. 21, said Don Yeomans, a planetary scientist who tracks near-Earth objects at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The only close asteroid approach on the horizon is forecast to occur on Feb. 13, 2013, when an asteroid will pass within 4.5 Earth radii to our planet (for perspective, Earth's radius is 3,963 miles, or 6,378 kilometers). The asteroid is not going to hit Earth, Yeomans said.

Other rumors ? that the Earth's magnetic field will suddenly reverse or that the planet will travel almost 30,000 light-years and fall into the black hole at the center of the Milky Way galaxy ? were also dismissed. (A light-year is the distance light travels in one year, or about 6 trillion miles, or 10 trillion km.)

One popular rumor that the planet will undergo a complete blackout from Dec. 23 to 25 earned a "What?" and blank looks from the panel of scientists.

Ultimately, concerns about Earth's fate would be better focused on slow-acting problems such as climate change rather than some sort of cosmic catastrophe, said Andrew Fraknoi, an astronomer at Foothill College in California.

Mitzi Adams, a heliophysicist at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center, agreed.

"The greatest threat to Earth in 2012, at the end of this year and in the future, is just from the human race itself," Adams said.

You can whip up your own face mask as per the need. Just make sure that you use the mask at least once in a week for best results in long term. Here, we present some of the best homemade facial masks for all skin types.

Egg White and Curd Mask

Take yolk of an egg and mix it with a teaspoon of fat free yogurt. Remember to take thick curd for the mask. If you will take watery curd for the mask, it will become more watery after adding yolk. If, you don?t have thick curd than sieve the watery curd so that you get thickest possible curd for your face mask. Now, apply this mask on wet face and let it stay for 20 minutes. Wash off with lukewarm water. This mask will tighten your skin pores and will unclog the pores.

Gram Flour and Raw Milk Mask

A household favorite mask in Indian households, this mask removes tan and makes skin brighter. You need to add a tablespoon of raw milk in a tablespoon of gram flour for making this mask. You can also add a pinch of turmeric to this paste. If you have oily skin that you can add a few drops of lemon also during summers.

Mix this paste well to form a smooth paste. Apply this mask on your face and neck. Let it air dry and then wash off with plain water with the help of a wash cloth. Since gram flour tends to stick to the skin, use a washcloth gently to remove the mask. Do not rub the washcloth vigorously on your face else you may hurt your skin.

Ripe Banana Mask

Ripe banana is an excellent moisturizer for facial skin. It suits all skin types and hydrates skin from within. Just take a ripe banana and mash it well to form a smooth paste.

Oatmeal and Yogurt Mask

Take a tablespoon of finely ground oatmeal. The oatmeal should be finely ground otherwise the face mask will not stay on face. A teaspoon of fat free yogurt and a few drops of honey. ?The Washington Post on the potential impact of Fiscal Cliff tax hikes on small businesses:

?So much of the discourse on the fiscal cliff has focused on the likely effects of rasing taxes on the middle class and the wealthy, which has overshadowed the bigger issue at hand: how to avoid raising taxes on the one vehicle that can get the economy moving ? small businesses.?

?What policymakers fail to realize is that most small business owners, who also employ most of the country?s workforce, declare their business profits on the owner?s personal income tax return and are taxed at the personal income tax rate. Given that the net income number for many will be over $250,000, the proposed tax hikes could have a dramatic effect on small businesses and the growth and hiring decisions they will make.?

U.S. Military Destroys Targets in History-Making Missile Test

Last Updated: 10/26/2012*

Raytheon missiles, radars and other systems played critical roles in the U.S. Missile Defense Agency's largest live-fire missile defense test in history today. Referred to as Flight Test Integrated-01 (FTI-01), the test near the Kwajalein Atoll simulated an all-out missile attack.

?This is the most sophisticated test of our ballistic missile defense capabilities ever attempted,? said Tom Kennedy, Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems president. ?Raytheon?s radars, missiles and integrated systems are an indispensable part of our nation?s missile defense architecture.?

During the test, Raytheon?s AN/TPY-2 X band radar detected a medium range ballistic missile target and provided cues to the THAAD weapon, enabling a successful intercept. Raytheon?s Patriot system detected, tracked and successfully intercepted a short range ballistic missile target with a PAC-3 interceptor and a low flying cruise missile target over water . The company?s Standard Missile-2 was fired from the USS FITZGERALD and engaged a low-flying cruise missile. A Raytheon Standard Missile-3 also participated in the test.

About Patriot
Patriot is the world?s most capable air and missile defense system, protecting against a full range of advanced threats, including aircraft, tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles.? It is owned and operated by 12 nations around the globe. Raytheon is both the prime contractor for domestic and international Patriot Air and Missile Defense Systems and the system integrator for Patriot Advanced Capability-3 missiles.

About AN/TPY-2
Playing a vital role in missile defense, AN/TPY-2 is a mobile X-band phased-array radar. The radar searches, acquires and tracks threat ballistic missiles, and is sophisticated enough to discriminate between threats and non-threats such as decoys.
?
In forward based mode, AN/TPY-2 detects and tracks an enemy ballistic missile starting at boost (ascent) phase of flight, which is shortly after the missile is launched.

In terminal mode, AN/TPY-2 serves as the search, track, discrimination and fire control radar for the THAAD weapon system. Forward-based AN/TPY-2?s in Japan, Israel and Turkey are currently enabling the protection of the U.S., deployed troops, and the U.S.?s friends and? allies from the growing threat of short-, medium- and long-range missiles.

About Standard Missile-2
The tried-and-true SM-2 is renowned for its role as the U.S. Navy?s primary, medium-range area air defense weapon. SM-2 is also the primary air defense weapon for eight allied navies. It protects ships by providing defense against advanced high- and low-altitude anti-ship missile threats.

About Standard Missile-3
Launched from U.S. and Japan navy cruisers and destroyers equipped with the Aegis ballistic missile defense weapon system, SM-3s destroy incoming ballistic missile threats in space by colliding with them. Often described as ?hitting a bullet with a bullet,? the collision in space is similar to the impact between two 10-ton trucks both traveling at 600 mph.?

Palestinians certain to win recognition as a state in United Nations vote

UNITED NATIONS (AP) ? The Palestinians are certain to win U.N. recognition as a state Thursday but success could exact a high price: Israel and the United States warn it could delay hopes of achieving an independent Palestinian state through peace talks with Israel.

The United States, Israel's closest ally, mounted an aggressive campaign to head off the General Assembly vote. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defiantly declared Thursday that the Palestinians would have to back down from long-held positions if they ever hope to gain independence.

Ahead of Thursday's vote, thousands of Palestinians from rival factions celebrated in the streets of the West Bank. Although the initiative will not immediately bring about independence, the Palestinians view it as a historic step in their quest for global recognition.

The United States, Israel's closest ally, mounted an aggressive campaign to head off the General Assembly vote.

In a last-ditch move Wednesday, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State William Burns made a personal appeal to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas promising that President Barack Obama would re-engage as a mediator in 2013 if Abbas abandoned the effort to seek statehood. The Palestinian leader refused, said Abbas aide Saeb Erekat.

With most of the 193 General Assembly member states sympathetic to the Palestinians, the vote is certain to succeed. Several key countries, including France, have recently announced they would support the move to elevate the Palestinians from the status of U.N. observer to nonmember observer state. However, a country's vote in favor of the status change does not automatically imply its individual recognition of a Palestine state, something that must be done bilaterally.

The Palestinians say they need U.N. recognition of a Palestinian state in the West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem, the lands Israel captured in 1967, to be able to resume negotiations with Israel. They say global recognition of the 1967 lines as the borders of Palestine is meant to salvage a peace deal, not sabotage it, as Israel claims.

The non-member observer state status could also open the way for possible war crimes charges against the Jewish state at the International Criminal Court.

Netanyahu warned the Palestinians Thursday that they would not win their hoped-for state until they recognize Israel as the Jewish homeland, declare an end to their conflict with the Jewish state and agree to security arrangements that protect Israel.

"The resolution in the U.N. today won't change anything on the ground," Netanyahu declared. "It won't advance the establishment of a Palestinian state, but rather, put it further off."

While Israel argues that Abbas is trying to dictate the outcome of border talks by going to the U.N., the recognition request presented to the world body in fact calls for a quick resumption of negotiations on all core issues of the conflict, including borders.

Netanyahu's predecessors accepted the 1967 lines as a basis for border talks. Netanyahu has rejected the idea, while pressing ahead with Jewish settlement building on war-won land, giving Abbas little incentive to negotiate.

For Abbas, the U.N. bid is crucial if he wants to maintain his leadership and relevance, especially following the recent conflict between his Hamas rivals in Gaza and Israel. The conflict saw the Islamic militant group claim victory and raise its standing in the Arab world, while Abbas' Fatah movement was sidelined and marginalized.

In a departure from previous opposition, the Hamas militant group, which rules the Gaza Strip, said it wouldn't interfere with the U.N. bid, and its supporters joined some of the celebrations Thursday.

In the West Bank city of Hebron, some in a crowd of several thousand raised green Hamas flags, while in the city of Ramallah, senior figures of Hamas and Islamic Jihad, two militant groups normally opposed to Abbas, addressed the crowd.

"It's the right step in the right direction," Nasser al-Shaer, a former deputy prime minister from Hamas, said of the U.N. bid.

The Palestinians chose the "International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People" for the vote. Before it takes place, there will be a morning of speeches by supporters focusing on the rights of the Palestinians. Abbas is scheduled to speak at that meeting, and again in the afternoon when he will present the case for Palestinian statehood in the General Assembly.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton warned Wednesday that the U.N. vote will not fulfill the goal of independent Palestinian and Israeli states living side by side in peace, which the U.S. strongly supports because that requires direct negotiations.

"We need an environment conducive to that," she told reporters in Washington. "And we've urged both parties to refrain from actions that might in any way make a return to meaningful negotiations that focus on getting to a resolution more difficult."

The U.S. Congress has threatened financial sanctions if the Palestinians improve their status at the United Nations.

Ahead of the vote, Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch filed an amendment to a defense bill Wednesday that would eliminate funding for the United Nations if the General Assembly changes Palestine's status.

Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev said that by going to the U.N., the Palestinians violate "both the spirit and the word of signed agreements to solve issues through negotiations," which broke down four years ago.

But Israeli officials appeared to back away from threats of drastic measures if the Palestinians get U.N. approval, with officials suggesting the government would take steps only if the Palestinians use their new status to act against Israel.

Regev, meanwhile, affirmed that Israel is willing to resume talks without preconditions.

U.N. diplomats said they will be listening closely to Abbas' speech to the General Assembly on Thursday afternoon before the vote to see if he makes an offer of fresh negotiations with no strings, which could lead to new talks. The Palestinians have been demanding a freeze on Israeli settlements as a precondition.

As a sign of the importance Israel attaches to the vote, Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman flew to New York and was scheduled to meet Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon before the vote.

Unlike the Security Council, there are no vetoes in the General Assembly and the resolution to raise the Palestinian status from an observer to a nonmember observer state only requires a majority vote for approval. To date, 132 countries ? over two-thirds of the U.N. member states ? have recognized the state of Palestine.

The Palestinians have been courting Western nations, especially the Europeans, seen as critical to enhancing their international standing. A number have announced they will vote "yes" including France, Italy, Spain, Norway, Denmark and Switzerland. Those opposed or abstaining include the U.S., Israel, Germany, Canada, the Netherlands and Australia.

The Palestinians turned to the General Assembly after the United States announced it would veto their bid last fall for full U.N. membership until there is a peace deal with Israel.

Following last year's move by the Palestinians to join the U.N. cultural agency UNESCO, the United States withheld funds from the organization, which amount to 22 percent of its budget. The U.S. also withheld money from the Palestinians.

StreamGuys Expands Digital Media Footprint for The Radio Network ...

Company?s cloud-based streaming architecture helps large broadcaster target mobile devices to foster network-wide audience growth

BAYSIDE, CALIFORNIA, November 28, 2012 ? Content delivery network and streaming media provider StreamGuys Inc. now supports all live and on-demand audio streaming for The Radio Network (TRN) of New Zealand ? helping one of the nation?s largest broadcasters improve audio quality and expand its streaming footprint beyond the desktop.

TRN operates 124 stations in 25 markets across the country, offering seven distinct brands that broadcast news, talk, sports and music. The broadcaster migrated to StreamGuys based on its desire to move into mobile streaming, which it identifies as a key growth area. TRN has since launched iPhone and Android mobile streams for key brands and stations, with StreamGuys delivering multiple services including program audio and branded apps developed by Jacobs Media.

?We see streaming media as an important platform for radio as listening moves to other devices,? said Carolyn Luey, Group General Manager for digital at The Radio Network. ?Our strategy for digital is to increase the number of touchpoints into our audience. The mobile smartphone is a critical part of this strategy.?

Luey notes that StreamGuys helps TRN deliver ?the full radio experience? through live audio and video streaming. StreamGuys? ability to support multiple audio formats over its cloud-based streaming architecture has simplified TRN?s workload, eliminating multiple format transcoding steps from their side.

?StreamGuys transcodes our streams into all the formats we need for delivery to many devices, including mobile,? said Wayne Sleeman, broadcast engineering manager at The Radio Network. ?This would not have been possible with our previous streaming architecture.?

Sleeman and Luey both express that audio quality has improved since migrating to StreamGuys, offering live mp3 and HE-AAC streams to all listeners. Reliability has also improved through StreamGuys? cloud-based architecture, which supports high availability, strong redundancy and flexibility to scale on short notice.

The scalability aspect is one that especially resonates with Sleeman. ?There is a lot of flexibility to the StreamGuys architecture,? he said. ?I can have a new stream up and configured by StreamGuys within a couple of hours and without a lot of aggravation.?

The flexibility of the StreamGuys architecture extends to video, which TRN has just started to explore. The broadcaster launched a live DJ stream for its NewsTalk ZB format that is gradually building numbers ? with Luey adding that stronger video emphasis is likely as more homes throughout New Zealand add fiber connections.

StreamGuys is also providing a comprehensive business software package through it architecture with detailed reporting and monitoring services. The two primary resources are SGMon, a concurrency monitoring service that provides per-stream data; and SGReports, which provides richer audience details within custom reports.

?The ability to help our customers reliably reach more devices and strategize future growth neatly summarizes the role of a full-service streaming media provider in today?s broadcast market,? said Jonathan Speaker, COO, StreamGuys. ?The Radio Network of New Zealand is an ideal example of how radio broadcasters are expanding their streaming media footprint into mobile and video to reach more listeners and entertain audiences in fresh ways.?

About The Radio Network (TRN)
The Radio Network operates 124 stations in New Zealand under nine brands including Newstalk ZB, ZM, Classic Hits, Radio Sport, Radio Hauraki, Coast and Flava. The Radio Network is jointly owned by Clear Channel Media + Entertainment and APN News and Media through Australian Radio Network. (www.radionetwork.co.nz)

Obama's Jan. 21 inauguration date 7th in history

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama is adding an asterisk to his name in the history books.

His inauguration will be only the seventh time that the constitutionally mandated date for a president's swearing-in ? Jan. 20 ? has fallen on a Sunday. So, following tradition, the inauguration will be on Monday, Jan. 21.

The adjustment puts Obama in league with President Ronald Reagan, whose second inauguration in 1985 also was changed from Sunday to Monday.

When the Constitution required a March 4 swearing-in, the first president to move his inauguration to Monday was James Monroe on March 5, 1821. After the 20th Amendment changed the inauguration to Jan. 20, Dwight Eisenhower and Reagan held private swearings-in on Sundays that fell on Jan. 20 and then held public ceremonies the following day.

Powerball Photo Fever! 5,000 Players Instagram Their Tickets

If you needed a reason not to buy a ticket for Wednesday's $500 million-plus Powerball lottery, here are a few. In fact, here are 5,000 -- roughly, the number of people who have taken pictures of their tickets on the popular photo-sharing service Instagram with the hashtag #powerball.

[More from Mashable: Mapping Thanksgiving Dishes With Twitter [VIDEO]]

Taken together, the multiple ticket pics should give you a sense of how unlikely it is that you'll win. Bear in mind that if you look at all of them, you'll still have an over-inflated sense of your odds of matching six winning numbers -- which are 1 in 175 million. Imagine if half the U.S. population Instagrammed one ticket each. You're getting close.

Still, the explosion of Powerball photos is an interesting phenomenon in itself. Not only does this Powerball boast a record-breaking jackpot, it is also the most widespread lottery ever recorded on social media. Some 600 tweets per hour with the hashtag #powerball were being seen by 6 p.m. EST Tuesday.

[More from Mashable: You Know the Old Social Media Saying [COMIC]]

Naturally, most of those tweets concentrated on what users would do with the money if they won. If you want to see an interesting cross-section of humanity's hopes and dreams, they're well worth reading.

So those thousands who Instagrammed a ticket may not win, but they can at least take comfort in being part of a bona fide social media phenomenon. And here's another benefit: unlike Instagramming your ballot, taking pictures of your lotto ticket is legal in all 50 states.

When It Pays To Refinance Your Mortgage ? Literally | DALLAS ...

When It Pays To Refinance Your Mortgage ? LiterallyTo refinance a mortgage means to pay off your existing loan and replace it with a new one.

There are many reasons why homeowners opt to refinance, from obtaining a lower interest rate, to shortening the term of the loan, to switching mortgage loan types, to tapping into home equity.

Each has its considerations.

Lower Your Mortgage Rate?
Among the best reasons to refinance is to get access to lower mortgage rates. There is no ?rule of thumb? that says how far rates should drop for a refinance to be sensible. Compare your closing costs to your monthly savings, and determine whether the math makes sense for your situation.

Shorten Your Loan Term?
Refinancing your 30-year fixed rate mortgage to a 20-year fixed rate or a 15-year fixed rate is a sensible way to reduce your long-term mortgage costs, and to own your home sooner. As a bonus, with mortgage rates currently near all-time lows, an increase to your monthly payment from a shorter loan term may be negligible.

Convert ARM To Fixed Rate Mortgage
Homeowners with adjustable-rate mortgages may want the comfort of a fixed-rate payment. Mortgage rates for fixed-rate mortgages are often higher than for comparable ARMs so be prepared to pay more to your lender each month.

Access Equity For Projects, Debts, Or Other Reasons
Called a ?cash out? refinance, Frisco homeowners can sometimes use home equity to retire debts, pay for renovations, or use for other purposes including education costs and retirement. Lenders place restrictions on loans of this type.

A refinanced home loan can help you reach specific financial goals or just put extra cash in your pocket each month ? just make sure that there?s a clear benefit to you. Paying large closing costs for small monthly savings or negligible long-term benefit should be avoided.

Many lenders offer low- or no-closing costs options for refinancing. Be sure to ask about it.

Did you see that? How could you miss it?

ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? You may have received CPR training some time ago, but would you remember the proper technique in an emergency? Would you know what to do in the event of an earthquake or a fire? A new UCLA psychology study shows that people often do not recall things they have seen -- or at least walked by -- hundreds of times.

For the study, 54 people who work in the same building were asked if they knew the location of the fire extinguisher nearest their office. While many of the participants had worked in their offices for years and had passed the bright red extinguishers several times a day, only 13 out of the 54 -- 24 percent -- knew the location.

When asked to find a fire extinguisher, however, everyone was able to do so within a few seconds; most were surprised they had never noticed them. The researchers found no significant differences between men and women, or between older and younger adults.

"Just because we've seen something many times doesn't mean we remember it or even notice it," said Alan Castel, an associate professor of psychology at UCLA and lead author of the study. "If I asked you to draw the front of a dime or the front of a dollar bill from memory, how well could you do that? You might get some elements right. Do you know who the president is? On the dime, is he facing left or right? Does it say 'In God We Trust' on the front of the dollar or the back? Do you know what else it says? You've seen it so many times, but you probably haven't paid much attention to it."

Castel said that not noticing things isn't necessarily bad, particularly when those things are not important in your daily life. "It might be a good thing not to burden your memory with information that is not relevant to you," he said.

But with safety information, such as knowing where fire extinguishers are or what to do in an emergency, being prepared can, of course, be very useful.

"When you're on an airplane, do you know where the life vest is and what to do in the event of an emergency?" Castel asked. "You've been told many times, but how would you respond under stressful conditions, when there could be smoke and people screaming?"

A few months after being asked the location of the nearest fire extinguisher, the study participants were asked again if they knew where the closest one was. All of them knew.

"We don't notice something if we're attending to something else," Castel said. "Fire extinguishers are bright red and very conspicuous, but we're almost blind to them until they become relevant."

What does this tell us about the importance of training, whether for emergencies or something as common as learning a new computer program?

Castel stresses that making errors during training is useful. As with the fire extinguisher exercise, errors -- or simple oversights -- can teach us that we don't know something well and need to pay more attention in order to remember it.

"It's good if errors happen during training and not during an event where you need the information," he said. "That's part of the learning process."

The study is published in the journal Attention, Perception, & Psychophysics.

Castel's co-authors are Michael Vendetti, a UCLA psychology graduate student, and Keith Holyoak, a UCLA professor of psychology. The study's participants work in UCLA's psychology building.

the art of construction: Remodeling Forecast

CAMBRIDGE, MA ??An improving housing market and record low interest rates are driving projections of strong gains in home improvement activity through the end of the year and into the first half of 2013, according to the Leading Indicator of Remodeling Activity (LIRA) released today by the Remodeling Futures Program at the Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard University. ?The LIRA suggests that the seeds for what appears to be a very robust remodeling recovery have been planted, with annual homeowner improvement spending expected to reach double-digit growth in the first half of 2013.Thursday, October 18, 2012

?After a bump in home improvement activity during the mild winter, there was a bit of a pause this summer,? says Eric S. Belsky, managing director of the Joint Center.? ?However, the LIRA is projecting an acceleration in market activity beginning this quarter, and strengthening as we move into the new year.?

?Strong growth in sales of existing homes and housing starts, coupled with historically low financing costs, have typically been associated with an upturn in home remodeling activity some months later,? says Kermit Baker, director of the Remodeling Futures Program at the Joint Center.? ?While the housing market has faced some unique challenges in recent years, this combination is expected to produce a favorable outlook for home improvement spending over the coming months.?

Here is a link to their website:?http://www.jchs.harvard.edu/lira-home-remodeling-spending-set-accelerate

My sense of things in the St. Louis area is that this is something that could happen. Deferred maintenance cannot be deferred forever. There are some programs in the region now and others coming on line in 2013 that my be of benefit to those looking to maximize value, energy efficiency and comfort as a part of a project.

This link shows loans, rebates and incentives for home energy audits, for example.

LG Spectrum 2 (Verizon Wireless)

The original LG Spectrum was a high-end?smartphone with a high-end price tag. Fast forward less than a year later, and we have the LG Spectrum 2. It's designed to compete with the rest of the heavy hitters in Verizon's lineup, and in most regards, it succeeds. But LG made one key difference this time around: Price. The LG Spectrum 2 is a high-end phone, but at $99.99, it costs half the price as other top choices in Verizon's lineup. That makes it a seriously good buy.

Design, Data Speeds, and Call Quality
Today's high-end smartphones are almost unanimously large, and the Spectrum 2 follows suit. It measures 5.31 by 2.69 by 0.39 inches (HWD) and weighs 5.59 ounces, which is a good deal heavier than the 4.69-ounce Samsung Galaxy S III. Physically, the phone looks a bit rectangular and boxy. The back panel is covered in rubberized black plastic, and there are plastic silver accent panels on the sides and matte black panels on the top and bottom. There's an LED-lit Power button on the top and two Volume buttons on the left. Like all big phones, it's difficult to hold the Spectrum 2 in one hand and pull the notifications bar down with your thumb.

The front of the phone is home to a beautiful 4.7-inch, 1280-by-720-pixel IPS LCD. While that resolution pales in comparison to the insane 5-inch, 1080p display on the new HTC Droid DNA, the Spectrum 2 gets incredibly bright, and text and images look sharp. It also looks better than the Galaxy S III, the Motorola Droid Razr HD, or the Droid Razr Maxx HD, all of which use PenTile panels that can make things look a little fuzzy. Given the size, typing on the onscreen keyboard is easy in both portrait and landscape modes.

The LG Spectrum 2 taps into Verizon's 4G LTE network where it's available, and 3G everywhere else. Verizon's 4G LTE network is very fast, and received top honors in our?Fastest Mobile Networks?tests earlier this year. The Spectrum 2 has good reception, and averaged 6Mbps down and 4Mbps up in our speed tests, which is consistent with most results we've seen lately. It can also be used as a mobile hotspot to connect up to 10 devices simultaneously with the proper service plan. And if you want to connect to Wi-Fi, the Spectrum 2 supports 802.11 a/b/g/n over the 2.4 and faster 5GHz bands, so wireless performance is solid across the board.

Call quality is average. Volume goes very loud in the phone's earpiece, but voices get reedy, especially at top volume. Transmissions through the mic are a little fuzzy and voices sound a bit muted, but calls are easy to understand overall. Calls sounded fine through a?Jawbone Era?Bluetooth headset and standard Android voice dialing worked well over Bluetooth. The phone's big 2,150mAh battery was good for a solid 12 hours and 42 minutes of talk time. The phone comes with a wireless charging battery cover, and can be charged wirelessly with a separate charging pad.

Hardware, Android, and Apps
The Spectrum 2 is powered by a 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 MSM8960 processor, which is the same chip you'll find in the Galaxy S III and Droid Razr HDs. It makes for excellent performance and benchmark scores comparable to those phones. We've seen this eclipsed by the emergence of quad-core devices like the Droid DNA, but it's still plenty fast?you'll be able to run all of the 600,000+ apps in the Google Play store without a problem.

Video: Black Friday by the numbers: Big crowds spending less

>>> we want to turn now to the black friday shopping rush. crowds turning out, looking for their bargains. did it all live up to the hype? michelle franzen is just outside the macy's store. good morning.

>> reporter: it's a little quiet here this morning, but we've made it through that initial wave of black friday that actually began early on thanksgiving this year. so how did we fare? retail analysts say the number of shoppers didn't necessarily go up, but you see that rush of shoppers going into those doors, just spread out a little earlier over that thanksgiving and black friday morning. now, in georgia, at one walmart store, there was a mad rush and crush of people grabbing for prepaid cell phones out of cases that were just opened. but for the most part, it was very orderly. people were out there in force looking for those hot door buster items, from electronics and flat screen tvs to deep discounts on clothing. overall, retail analysts say they're expecting that a drop in shoppers this weekend, that's from thursday to sunday, but overall, with shoppers having nearly five weeks to shop, they're hoping that sales will increase just over 4%. that's the estimate. and shoppers will spend nearly $600 billion. so people will be out in force again today on this saturday, looking for whole new round of sales.

>> michelle franzen , thank you.

>>> how did this black friday add up? kayla, good morning.

>> good morning, erica.

>> we had an overview there from michelle. in terms of the discounts, did these live up to expectations?

>> customers will always say they didn't, because if you weren't there at the crack of dawn, you likely missed out on the heavily discounted big ticket items. but that being said, there were supposed to be more deals. 20,000 deals advertised versus 17,000 last year. but they were roughly in line. experts say they were 25% to 60% off on average with the televisions and apparel getting the heaviest discounts.

>> what about how this is going to add up for retail? final numbers probably will come on monday. but this is black friday because it tends to push them into profit for the year with retailers. is this going to happen with the numbers?

>> it's always the hope. they're waiting for cyber monday. foot traffic was up slightly. if you look at places like the mall of america , or macy's in herald square , you're seeing about a 30% increase in foot traffic. the problem is people were on average expecting to spend less money. american express said the average shopper who was out on black friday spent $398, which is a lot of money. but it's a 25% drop from last year. so it's likely that even though there were more people, they probably spent less.

>> there were also more hours in which to spend your money. i feel like next year it's going to start on monday. but it was a little bit of backlash. walmart and walmart employees striking, protesting here. did it have an impact on sales for some of those stores? did people stay away ?

>> interestingly, walmart is one of the only retailers that we've heard from so far as far as the success of black friday. the retailer came out and said this was our best ever, actually. between 8:00 p.m . and midnight on thursday, which is when the backlash started. of course, the employees did not want to work during that time. walmart said the bulk of the protesters were not store associates and they actually sold 5,000 items per second.

>> it's almost like campaign ads. we hear they work and they're not going away. despite the complaints, it's sort of like we're going to keep opening earlier because it works. what about what we have coming up monday? cyber monday has become such a big thing. anything to look forward to?

>> i think everyone shops every day online now. that's the problem with cyber monday. it used to be this heavily advertised event. but because of thanksgiving, that's the day that everyone is sitting around at home and with the time to shop, you have a glass of wine, you grab your ipad and before you know it, you're onshopping.

>> a lot of mobile shopping now. mobile shopping up 65%. it's not just you and me grabbing our ipads.

NYC storm victims' homes looted over Thanksgiving

NEW YORK (AP) ? Some residents of a New York City neighborhood that suffered fire and flooding during Superstorm Sandy say thieves looted their damaged houses over Thanksgiving.

The New York Post reports (http://bit.ly/QgcssM ) that thieves struck at least three homes in the Breezy Point section of Queens.

One couple lost a $25,000 coin collection along with jewelry and watches.

The break-ins occurred Wednesday or Thursday when many residents were away for the holiday.

Robert Bainbridge says looters took $400 in two change jars. He says he's trying to repair his flooded home and the theft "adds insult to injury."

The Post reports that there were 14 home break-ins in Breezy Point from Nov. 12 to Nov. 18. There were none during the same period last year.

The Ugly Duckling House | DIY Home Improvement Blog: Saturday ...

Because it's Thanksgiving week, and this week is always about family for me, I wanted to feature something a little closer to home: ?tea towels.

Plain, thin, white tea towels will always remind me of my grandmother. ?She uses them all the time, has a ton, and keeps them forever. ?I've been thinking lately that I'd like to have a few of hers and screen print them with something to use in my own kitchen, more or less as a decoration rather than something functional.

On Etsy, there are a lot of shops who are addressing both form and function in their designs:

Dusty Wright: Thankful For Tasty New Rock Music!

Happy Thanksgiving. It's been a terrific month for mining new music. I caught an advance screening of Led Zeppelin's new concert movie at MoMA (and their press conference), discovered what may be my favorite album of the year, and found inspiring young musicians sharing their chops and muses with the world. With the holidays around the corner, here are some early suggestions for music very much worth sharing with friends, lovers, bosses, and family.?

"You're So Great / It's All Right, Ma" Wendy James? You're So Great?E.P. (Cobraside)

If Brit-born/NYC-based Ms. James's claim-to-fame-band?Transvision?Vamp was a tad too sugar-pop coated for your New Yawk punk?rawk?palette, not to worry. Thanks to guitarist James Williamson (Iggy?Pop Stooge) and drummer James?Sclavunos?(Nick Cave alumnus), she's found some downtown 'tude. The A-side is a fun retro Ramones-style punk ditty, but it's the flip-side?Grinderman-grind Dylan cover where it all comes together. For Zimmerman purists, this is sacred ground, but they pull it off. Love to hear a LP of covers with this trio's?mojo?on overdrive.

"Tell Me (What's On Your Mind)" Allah-Las?Allah-Las?(Innovative Leisure)

Produced and released by Nick?Waterhouse, whose R&B-fueled debut Time's All Gone?is one of my favorite albums of year. He has dipped this L.A.-based band into a giant vat of Nuggets-era garage?psychedelia, and that's a good thing.?Pedrum?Siadatian's ringing mid-'60s?Murph Squire 12-string guitar is soaked in enough Fender reverb to melt your face. And singer Miles Michaud's snarl sounds like early Jagger, especially on this single.?As easy to swallow as your favorite tab of acid.?

"When My Train Pulls In" Gary Clark,?Jr.?Blak?&?Blu?(Warner)

A super fine axe-slinger who has plenty of R&B swag in his tunes and much-deserved Hendrix/Stevie Ray Vaughn comparisons. While I don't love the production sheen on this new CD, it's live where he really swings. (I caught him at the Central Park Summerstage in August.) Gary, dude, lose some of that modern radio-friendly compression veneer ("The Life") and hire Nick?Waterhouse?to produce your next album. Or, dare I say, the L.A.-based Eddie Kramer! This track rises above some of the aforementioned slickness and hits you in the gut; his intro git-lick?like an inverted "Oh Well" (Peter Green/Fleetwood Mac) and two meaty solos that will leave you salivating for more.

First Aid Kit The Lion's Roar (Wichita?Recordings)

Admittedly, I'm late to this extraordinary effort, as it was released last January, but no worries as it was re-released with a fetching new folk-rock/Americana single "Wolf." Clear and strong vocals from Swedish sisters Johanna and Klara S?derberg and their father?Benkt on bass. Undeniable magic throughout -- lyrically and melodically. You'll love their homage to Gram Parsons and his first lady of country rock on the gorgeous "Emmylou." For fans of Fleet Foxes, Civil War, et al. Another potential contender for my top ten year's end list.

Led Zeppelin Celebration Day?(Atlantic CD/DVD)

This concert was recorded during Atlantic Records founder?Ahmet?Ertegun's tribute on December 10, 2007 at London?s O2 Arena with a reunited Led Zeppelin with John Bonham's son Jason behind the kit. (20 million fans applied for an 18,000 seat lottery!) As the show unfolds vocalist Jimmy Page, guitarist Robert Plant, and bassist John Paul Jones expand and connect with their audience like a superb vintage wine opening up, albeit 27 years after their last performance. Plant no longer can hit those high notes of his youth, but his vocal delivery is superb, And Page? His playing is a master class of classic rock riff dexterity, legendary riffs that he created. And Mr. Jones and Bonham keep it anchored in one giant heavy pocket. Moreover, they explore the bluesy?side of their heavy metal thunder and in doing so connect with their rich catalog in very intoxicating fashion. Now our children can bear witness to?LZ's enduring legacy. (I was lucky enough to ingest their majesty in '74 in Cleveland.) To be released on vinyl in December, too.

"San Francisco" The Mowgli's?Love's Not Dead E.P. (Island)

Damn fine sing-along about the City in the Bay. Retro without sounding forced, exuberant and exhilarating.?Like Arcade Fire on a?SoCal Laurel Canyon folk-rock trip out. Single of the month, people! Check out 'em out live:

"Doom and Gloom" The Rolling Stones GRRR! (UME)

Hard to believe that the "World's Greatest Rock and Roll Band" is celebrating its Golden Jubilee (50 years). Recorded for a new three-CD career retrospective, this post-apocalypse rocker is clearly the boys' best single since...well, the '70s. No needless modern production filler, just taut and sinewy Ronnie and Keef?guitars, bass, walloping Watts drums, and snarling Mick Jagger vocals.?

Papa Grows Funk?Needle in the Groove?(Funky?Krewe?Records)

Witnessed this funky gumbo NOLA outfit blow up the stage and audience as an opener for Little Feat in the late Summer in NYC. So very hard to pick just one track?cuz top to bottom it's the perfect Saturday night?par-tay?record, a tasty, easily digested mash-up of the Meters meets?Funkadelic. No lie.

Soundgarden King Animal (Universal Republic)

And while we're reminiscing...?Soundgarden?remains my favorite American grunge rock band. (Sorry Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and Queens of the Stone Age fans.) Yes, Chris Cornell has soldiered on as a solo artist and drummer Matt Cameron has been moonlighting with Pearl Jam, but they both wisely reunited with guitarist Kim Thayil and bassist Ben Shepherd?after an 18-year layoff. Older, wiser, but still with plenty to offer -- killer guitar riffs and many heavy, memorable tunes. Contender for my favorite hard rock album of the year.

Hot Rats Frank Zappa?(Zappa Records)

When Mr. Zappa roamed the Earth, rock music was king. Hopefully with his entire catalog getting sonic overhauls, a new generation will come to appreciate his compositional genius. (It was no accident that Zubin?Mehta, conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, invited him to compose a new work that he debuted at UCLA in 1970!) While he used humor -- sometimes a tad too frat boy -- in his clever album, song titles, and lyrical word play to convey his messages, it's his music that stands the test of time. Hot Rats remains one of the most beloved releases in his discography. A heady, primarily instrumental, hybrid of jazz and rock (remember jazz-rock?), and a Captain Beefheart?collaboration entitled "Willie The Pimp" to give it a little extra zing.

peace, Dusty
