Organization
StoryCorps is the acclaimed national nonprofit organization created by MacArthur Fellow Dave Isay in 2003.? Its partners include the Library of Congress, NPR, the Smithsonian Museum of African American History and Culture, and the National September 11 Memorial and Museum.? Funders include the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the Atlantic Philanthropies, the National Endowment for the Arts, the MacArthur Foundation, and the Ford Foundation.? StoryCorps has expanded rapidly in size and stature during its nine years in existence, and it is quickly growing into a national institution.? To date, StoryCorps has recorded and archived more than 45,000 interviews with more than 80,000 participants in every state of the nation. Current goals include the promotion of an education curriculum program, StoryCorpsU; ongoing and future special initiatives (including Latino, LGBTQ, and African American initiatives); and interview collection booths (in Atlanta and San Francisco).

This is done to remind us of our shared humanity by strengthening and building the connections between people, teaching the value of listening, and weaving into the fabric of our culture the understanding that every life matters.? By accomplishing this, an invaluable archive of American voices and wisdom for future generations is created.

Position Description:
With an annual budget of $6.4 million for FY2012 and 75 employees, StoryCorps is a rapidly expanding organization that is seeking an extraordinary individual to increase its visibility. The Associate Director of Marketing and Communications (?ADMC?) is a strategic, proactive, and aggressive manager who serves as the primary relationship manager for promotion and publicity needs of the President, members of the Board, and all StoryCorps departments.??Reporting to the?Director of Development, the ADMC?leads a fast-paced, creative, and highly collaborative team that successfully promotes StoryCorps? content, programs, and services to print, broadcast, and online media outlets; creates flawless marketing collateral; manages an annual campaign for StoryCorps? National Day of Listening; and manages the design and content of StoryCorps? two websites ??storycorps.org?and?nationaldayoflistening.org.?With an eye towards brand consistency and clarity, s/he oversees the development of core messages for StoryCorps and their delivery externally and internally.

S/he must possess exceptional communication and writing skills, demonstrate cultural competence, and have the desire to be a part of a fast paced, entrepreneurial team. As StoryCorps seeks to tell the stories from an inclusive range of American voices ? from its Griot Initiative to preserve stories of African Americans, to its Historias Initiative to collect the experiences of Latinos ? candidates with knowledge of the histories and cultures of these communities are strongly encouraged to apply.

Specific Responsibilities:

Overall:?
Increase the visibility of StoryCorps, generate press, reinforce its institutional and brand identity, vary and increase promotion of its content and products, and connect with diverse communities

Marketing and Communications Strategy:

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive marketing and communications strategy that increases StoryCorps? visibility, reinforces an institutional and brand identity, results in increased and varied promotion of StoryCorps content, and includes targeted outreach to diverse communities
  • Create and implement an effective online communications strategy using various communications channels, including?storycorps.org, blogs, and social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter?

Public Relations:

  • Regularly secure features about StoryCorps in major media outlets through cultivation of key media contacts
  • Regularly and quickly produce content for press releases, media advisories, and promotional campaigns
  • Coordinate regular media events for StoryCorps products, services, and broadcasts; proactively capitalize on smaller media opportunities on a regular basis
  • Manage annual National Day of Listening marketing and media campaign, working with internal and external partners to coordinate successful, measurable media hits and placements, as well as participation by various community partners
  • Manage the promotion of StoryCorps? books and animations through various media channels and promotional events
  • Schedule and execute a national book tour in a timely and efficient manner, in collaboration with relevant StoryCorps personnel

Communications and Marketing:

  • Supervise the design, development, and implementation of all StoryCorps print and digital marketing collateral, ensuring their quality and consistency
  • Create and implement an effective online communications strategy using various communications channels, including?storycorps.org, blogs, and social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter
  • Supervise and assess performance of Marketing and Communications staff
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities to support the organization?s marketing and communications needs, as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

  • Bachelor?s Degree and a minimum of 6 years? experience in media relations, communications, or a related field, at an organization of national scope
  • Demonstrated experience in developing outreach strategies for diverse communities, managing those strategies, and producing and evaluating results
  • Experience working directly with members of the press to secure placements that promote an organization or product
  • Proven ability as an effective leader, with strong team-building, conflict negotiation, and collaboration skills
  • Experience providing staff supervision and evaluation
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with impeccable attention to detail
  • Excellent organizational and multi-tasking abilities
  • Demonstrated analytical skills and problem-solving ability; ability to be flexible and adaptable to a growing, changing organization
  • Understanding of online and offline initiatives including social media, branding, local and national advertising, cause marketing, promotions, and other marketing strategies
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Ability to travel

Preferred:

  • Work experience in a non-profit environment or with Latino/ African American communities
  • Experience managing media events and acting as an organizational spokesperson ?on-air?
  • ?Proficiency on a Mac platform
  • Basic HTML (blog level)
  • Basic skills or fluency in a language other than English; Spanish language fluency is strongly preferred.
