Psychosocial distress associated with increased stroke risk

Dec. 13, 2012 ? People over age 65 with high psychosocial distress face increased risk of stroke , according to new research in the American Heart Association journal Stroke.

Psychosocial distress is a broad concept that includes depression, stress, a negative outlook and dissatisfaction with life.

In their 10-year study, researchers followed 4,120 people in the Chicago Health and Aging Project for rates of death and stroke incidents. Due to some participants being involved in an HMO only 2,649 participants were analyzed for rates of incident stroke. Participants were 65 years and older (average age 77, 62 percent women, 61 percent African American). Researchers identified 151 deaths from stroke and 452 events that led to first-time hospitalization for stroke.

Those with the most psychosocial distress had three times the risk of death from stroke and a 54 percent increased risk of first hospitalization from stroke compared to those least distressed.

The impact of psychosocial distress on stroke risk did not differ by race or by sex, researchers said.

"People should be aware that stress and negative emotions often increase with age," said Susan Everson-Rose, Ph.D., M.P.H., study senior author and associate professor of medicine and associate director of the Program in Health Disparities Research at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. "Family members and caregivers need to recognize these emotions have a profound effect on health."

In a separate analysis, researchers found a striking association between psychosocial distress and risk of hemorrhagic stroke (bleeding), but not ischemic stroke (caused by blood clot).

"There was about 70 percent excess risk for each unit increase in distress that wasn't explained by known stroke risk factors," Everson-Rose said. "So there must be other biologic pathways at play linking distress to hemorrhagic stroke in particular."

The researchers measured psychosocial distress by four indicators: perceived stress, life dissatisfaction, neuroticism and depressive symptoms. They used standardized rating scales to determine the score of each indicator, such as the 6-item Perceived Stress Scale. For each indicator, higher scores represent a higher level of psychosocial distress. A distress factor score was based on averaging the values of the psychosocial measures.

For the study, researchers conducted in-depth interviews in homes in three stable neighborhoods on the south side of Chicago representing African-Americans and Caucasians from the same socio-economic spectrum. The interviews covered medical history, cognitive function, socioeconomic status, behavioral patterns, traditional risk factors for stroke and psychosocial characteristics.

Stroke deaths were verified by the National Death Index and stroke hospitalizations were based on Medicare claims from the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

"It's important to pay attention when older people complain of distress and recognize that these symptoms have physical effects on health outcome and clearly affect stroke risk," Everson-Rose said.

The Ping Golf Clubs For Sale - Fitness equipment Classifieds

Free Classifieds Health & Fitness Fitness Equipment

With the introduction of the Ping G2 driver in 2003, Ping made a tremendous move to improve the performance of their drivers while still satisfying players who desired a more traditional shape and feel.

Cosmetically there is very little separating the G10 from its predecessors, the G2 and G5 drivers. However, some major tweaks in construction and design have gone into the new G10 compared to the G5. Selective areas of the club?s crown have been made with thinner material to allow Ping engineers greater discretionary weight to move down low and further back in the club. Additionally, Ping has also tweaked the overall geometry of the club so the face is deeper. A deeper face allows for a larger hitting area and greater ball speed on miss hits. Ping also has a draw version of the ping golf clubs for sale G10 which features heel biased internal weighting and a hosel moved forward in relation to the face to help promote a right to left ball flight. Ping has come a long way in driver design since the old TiSI. The G10 fits in nicely alongside any other driver in the market with its perfect looks. The club has a short hosel and it combines with a very square face angle that better players naturally gravitate toward.

One aspect of the club which has divided users in the past centers around the crescent moon alignment aid that began in the G2. This has been addressed in the G10 in a very impressive way that might satisfy all players. The crescent alignment aid is still there, but Ping has made it incredibly faint. The orange color theme extends into the shaft which is a light copper color and has some subtle Ping graphics near the grip. The sound at impact is a low, muted ?whack? which I find very pleasing compared to the trend of high pitched sounds most drivers seem to make these days which feel more like hitting a golf ball with an aluminum can than a golf club. Even the most ardent traditionalists will be able to appreciate the G10's feel. Fitting will be a very important consideration for anyone interested in the ping golf drivers G10. I am not a golfer who struggles with controlling high launch spin, but even I found that the G10 launches very high for its loft. Although the club did seem to spin a bit more for me, it definitely did not balloon in the wind, the spin rate was more than acceptable.

The stock TFC-129 shaft is also worthy of mention. Stock shafts have received a reputation for being an overly soft and inconsistent. The shaft is smooth with a very perceptible kick, but it still retains quite a bit of control even on harder swings. For those who desire a different bend profile, the stiff tip Grafalloy ProLaunch Red and UST Proforce V2 High Launch will also be available. Even moderate miss hits do not lose much ball speed at all. However, this forgiveness means the G10 is not likely to be the best choice for players who love to shape their shots. Common convention holds that a longer than normal club is typically much harder to control. Also, the increased ball speed could very well be due to the longer shaft. Either way, it all seems to combine together to work very well in the ping drivers G10. I can tell you for a fact that even though the G10 may seem to only have minor differences over previous models, the minor changes in weight distribution and construction have combined to form a driver that is a major improvement in ball speed and forgiveness.

With solid performance, and feel, its biggest drawback may be the difficulty it presents to highly skilled players who love to work the ball. With a driver how much more could someone ask for?

Small Business Apocalypse Or Political Vendetta? | ZeroHedge

Wolf Richter?? www.testosteronepit.com?? www.amazon.com/author/wolfrichter

The National Federation of Independent Business tried to shock the world with its report that small-business owner optimism plunged 5.6 points to 87.5%?below the 87.8% of the apocalyptic post-Lehman November 2008. A huge setback; small businesses are the job creating machine of the economy. ?Something bad happened, and it wasn?t Sandy,? said NFIB chief economist Bill Dunkelberg. ?It was the election.?

Small-business Optimism took a nasty hit during the financial crisis?and hasn?t recovered yet. When NFIB started the monthly surveys in 1986, it set the level at 100. Optimism would drop into the 90s then bounce back above 100. From late 2003 through 2004, peaks approached 110. But in 2005, Optimism faded. It dipped below 90 for the first time in March, 2008, as Bear Stearns blew up. By September, it was back at 92.9, the high for the year. Despite Lehman?s collapse.

Small-business owners apparently liked that Wall Street got clobbered. As markets nosedived, however, optimism followed. In October 2008, it dropped 5.4 points to 87.8, rose a smidgen in November, then descended to its low of 81.0 in March, 2009.

Recovery of small-business Optimism was only slight, unlike the markets that were goosed by the trillions that the Fed handed to its cronies. Small businesses got no more than crumbs. By April 2010, Optimism ventured above 90, then dropped again. In February, 2011, it reached a post-crisis high of 94.5, dropped again, hit that high once more in April, 2012, then dropped and finally hit 87.5% in November. A tough slog.

The most significant factor in November?s plunge?? ?The expectation that future business conditions will be worse than current ones,? Dunkelberg explained, the Outlook for General Business Conditions having crashed from +2% to -35%?worse than anything during the crisis. A ?poisonous climate for investment and expansion,? Dunkelberg said. ?

Problems were lurking everywhere, such as inventories that were too high, but some sub-indices, particularly for ?actual? sales and earnings, weren?t all bad, given the debacle of the post-crisis years. Credit was plentiful. Actual and planned job openings continued to tick up, as did hiring plans. Bad news for workers though: planned compensation has been dropping this year, after a feeble recovery from crisis lows.

In this manner, the details, graphs, and tables of the report don?t paint a picture of the sudden apocalypse that the headline number promised?but of a long-term depression that started in 2005 and has improved only a few notches since the trough of the crisis! All in an economy whose growth is ?lumpy? [read... It?s Official: The Consumer Is Alive and?Dead].

But what jumps out already in the introduction is a political agenda rather than objective interpretation of data: ?Between the looming ?fiscal cliff,? the promise of higher healthcare costs, and the endless onslaught of new regulations, owners have found themselves in a state of pessimism. We are forced to ask: is this the new normal?? So who are these ?owners,? and who is ?we??

A lobbying and advocacy organization with offices in Washington DC and all state capitals, NFIB claims to be ?nonpartisan? despite its support for Republican candidates. Its PAC, the SAFE Trust (Save America?s Free Enterprise Trust), is ?the most powerful and effective small business political action committee in the country.? Among NFIB?s many, often laudable, causes was its fierce opposition to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, or Obama-care; it joined 26 states in the lawsuit that challenged its constitutionality. And lost when the Court upheld most provisions.

With 350,000 members?of the 6 - 30 million small businesses in the US, depending on who is being counted?the organization represents between 1.2% and 5.8% of all small-business owners. These members received the surveys that would lead to the report. Of the 3,938 responses, 733 were deemed ?useable.? They represented companies ranging from one-employee operations (10%) to companies with more than 40 employees (7%).

The data collected from the ?useable? responses was further trimmed by excluding the results from the ?Sandy States,? namely ?NJ, DE, NC, DC, VA, WV, MD, MA, CT, and eastern portions of PA and NY.? Even though there were ?no significant differences? in states impacted by Sandy?capital spending plans were ?slightly higher,? labor force indicators ?slightly worse,? etc.?the report comes to the conclusion that the decline in Optimism wasn?t related to Sandy but ?the resolution of the election.? And it used the trimmed and manipulated results to lash out against President Obama.

?The ?war? on success is now public policy as the President insists on higher tax rates for the ?rich,? those making $250,000 or more,? Dunkelberg states. ?He continues to obfuscate by claiming that only 3% of small-business owners will be impacted, as if even those are not a concern.? Hence, the sudden and apocalyptic post-election decline in small-business optimism. But the long shadow of a political agenda darkens the validity of the data?just when we need accurate data the most.

A similar thing occurred with a thermometer into the brains of corporate America that also plunged to lows not seen since the financial crisis. But just before Lehman, these CEOs had exactly zero predictive capabilities. Read.... Fear of Impending Economic Collapse Or Just?Manipulation?

And here is California, in trouble again: revenue for November fell 10.8% below budget.?Democrats thought they could hammer ?the rich? by convincing voters to pass Proposition 30 to create the highest state income tax in the nation.?But it appears high-income earners have ?voted-with-their-feet,? resulting in a $1 billion shortfall in taxes, and the beginning of a new financial crisis. Read.... California?s Budget Goes Off the?Cliff.

Chobani founder turns yogurt into a craze

By Alissa Figueroa
Rock Center

One day in 2005 Hamdi Ulukaya, owner of a small feta cheese company in upstate New York, took a tour that would change his life. As he walked through the 100-year-old yogurt factory, a handful of employees were busying themselves with the work of shutting the factory down.

?On the way back, I called my attorney and I said, ?I just saw a plant and I think I want to buy it,?? explains Ulukaya, a 40-year-old immigrant who grew up on a dairy farm in eastern Turkey. ?He said, "You?re really, really crazy. That's not going to happen.?"

But Ulukaya saw something in the defunct factory that no one else did: an opportunity to bring the yogurt of his youth to the masses. So using loans of less than $1 million, some backed by the Small Business Administration, he bought the plant.

Ulukaya spent the next two years developing the recipe for Chobani yogurt.

NBC News

Chobani founder Hamdi Ulukaya and Rock Center's Harry Smith.

?That place became my home,? Ulukaya told Rock Center's Harry Smith in an interview airing Thursday, Dec. 13 at 10pm/9CT on Rock Center with Brian Williams. ?It was lonely days, difficult days, a lot of question marks, a lot of pressure to see if I would make it to the next day.?

No longer does Ulukaya have to worry if his company will make its next payroll.

WATCH: Chobani founder on billion dollar Greek yogurt business

Since launching in 2007, Chobani has grown into a $1 billion business, according to Ulukaya, with no signs of slowing down. He also did something arguably more impressive: he changed what Americans eat.

Before Chobani came along, Greek yogurt sales in America were nearly nonexistent. Now, more than a third of the yogurt we eat is Greek, and Chobani is the biggest seller.

Ulukaya's personal wealth is now valued at $1.1 billion by the Bloomberg Billionaire's Index.

Impact on the local community

The good fortune, though, is not only his. Chobani's rise has been a lifeline for one of the most economically depressed parts of the country: rural upstate New York. This area was struggling long before the recession hit, with tens of thousands of manufacturing jobs disappearing in the last few decades.

?I expected the plant to sit there vacant [after Kraft left]. I had these visions of it becoming dilapidated and falling apart,? says Maria Wilcox, one of the four remaining Kraft workers that Ulukaya hired from New Berlin, the tiny town where the plant is located.?

Growing from those first few workers, Chobani now employs more than 1,300 people in upstate New York and has made $193 million in capital investments on the old factory.

?Other companies came and looked at the plant and the surrounding area and left. [Ulukaya] always had a vision for the plant here that included the community,? says New Berlin Mayor Terry Potter.? ?He?s brought a sense of rejuvenation to the community.?

Along with good-paying jobs, Chobani built New Berlin its first little league field, free of charge.

Chobani also trucks 4 million pounds of milk daily to its New Berlin factory from the area's 5,300 dairy farms. New York produced some 530 million pounds of yogurt in 2011 -- more than twice 2008 levels ? and a direct result of Greek yogurt production.

A new kind of CEO

Ulukaya has been able to accomplish all of this so quickly by bypassing many of the traditional models for business success, especially in the food industry. Instead of focus groups, consultants and big marketing campaigns, Ulukaya has focused on perfecting his product based on response from consumers. Ulukaya still has messages from customers (every single one) forwarded to his cell phone daily.

The company has been particularly good at harnessing the power of positive feedback online.

?The communication is so fast; you don't need huge money for the marketing or your voice to be heard,? says Ulukaya. ?It's a flat world.?

In fact, Chobani has only launched two television ad campaigns, the most recent during the 2012 London Olympics, for which they were an official sponsor. Ulukaya had to pull the ads because the factory couldn?t keep up with the increased demand.

Chobani runs on the idea that consumers? voices will shape the market; with the internet, word of mouth is a more valuable marketing tool than ads, says Ulukaya. This helps new guys on the scene make a big impact quickly. And, he adds, it?s their responsibility to challenge the status quo.

?It's a shame what's in the supermarkets today,? says Ulukaya. ?It doesn't have to have all these preservatives.? It doesn't have to have all these bad colors and stuff like that. . . It's the manufacturer's responsibility. They can make it better. They can make it nutritious, and they can make it accessible. That's what we did in Chobani.?

So what?s next for the company?

Chobani just opened its first retail store, a boutique yogurt bar in SoHo, this summer. Now customers can sit down to enjoy a ?yogurt creation," with gourmet fresh toppings and, of course, Chobani.

Ulukaya is coy about what?s on the horizon for Chobani as far as new products, but he?s clear about one thing: this is only the beginning.

Beijing targets those who cross the street 'with Chinese characteristics'

Beijing's 'strike hard' campaign aims to tame the anarchy that reigns at crosswalks and intersections. ?Our correspondent's take: 'Good luck.'

A new ?strike hard? campaign, launched last week, is aimed at ?bringing order to traffic and security? at the city?s intersections, according to the Beijing municipal police website.

Good luck to them.

The police appear to have been goaded into action not so much by the anarchy that has long reigned on most Beijing streets, but by an online comment that went viral a few weeks ago.

A blogger remarked ? entirely accurately ? that crossing the road with Chinese characteristics has nothing to do with whether the lights are red or green. The determining factor is how many people are waiting on the curb. Once a crowd has reached critical mass, it moves.

As more and more Beijingers buy cars, and drive them without necessarily bothering to get a license, life for the city?s crowds of pedestrians and its diminishing band of cyclists has grown increasingly hazardous.

Pedestrian fatalities in China are 18 times higher, per 100,000 motorized vehicles, than in the United States, according to Ni Ying, who did her doctoral thesis on the dangers of Chinese crossroads.

?High rates of pedestrian noncompliance and low rates of driver-yielding behavior? accounted for the Chinese statistics, she concluded.

Jaywalking is a national habit that the capital?s police would like to break, but they are not training their sights on pedestrians alone. The goal, says the official website warning, is also to enforce drivers? lane discipline and to stop cyclists crashing red lights, carrying passengers on the back seat, and riding the wrong way up cycle lanes.

This is nothing less than an assault on a fundamental right that all Chinese citizens hold dear: to do precisely as they please on the public highway.

Learning to 'Beijing it'

I walk, ride my bike, and drive my car all the time in Beijing, and frankly it is a miracle that I am still alive. Not least because after living here for six years, I have gone native when it comes to traffic etiquette.

I still recall the sense of pride with which I rode my bicycle the wrong way up a street for the first time, taking a call on my mobile phone. I felt like a true Beijinger. And the quaint idea that I should stop at a red light rather than weave a path through the cars getting in my way is one that I abandoned a long time ago.

I am better behaved behind the wheel of my 1980s Jeep Cherokee (an ideal, bullock-like vehicle in which to navigate the city?s traffic). But even then the frustration of watching other drivers jam up an intersection by ignoring the simplest rules of the road, not to mention elementary courtesy, can tempt me to barge into the melee myself.

In my family, we have coined a verb for the sort of inconsiderate and patently illegal behavior to which my wife and I occasionally sink, such as sailing past a highway traffic jam in the emergency vehicle lane: We call that ?to Beijing it.?

If the city police have their way, that kind of description will soon be history. But I wouldn?t hold my breath.

The Beijing police department is running a little quiz on its ?weibo,? a Twitter-like platform, asking people why they think Beijingers are so careless on the road. The two most popular answers so far are ?a weak sense of the law? and ?low levels of public morality and civic responsibility.?

It will take more than a few traffic fines to deal with those problems, I?m afraid. And I say that as one who, to his shame, knows whereof he speaks.

Party promoter Denise Madison was looking for a complementary business offering for her maturing clientele when she ventured to buy a travel agency in 2008. Disappointed with one franchisor?s offering, she set her sights on Cruise One, a travel franchise that offers cruise vacations.

?I read their plan from A to Z; I was very impressed. I liked the percentages, the bonuses, the incentives. Your biggest job is to book the client. They provide you with all of the marketing materials and updated information,? says Madison, who operates the franchise (www.vivalacruise.com) outside of her day job. Indeed, all CruiseOne franchisees receive five customizable consumer websites to drive online bookings.

Furthermore, ?their name carries. So, essentially we brought the brand,? adds Madison, who purchased the franchise along with her business partner and life partner Tania Savigne. Their total investment outlay was around $11,000.

Playing off of an existing events database of thousands of clients, the couple initially geared the business towards lesbians of color. ?It is something that was lacking. Gay men have a lot of travel companies that cater to them. But when it comes to the lesbian community, you have only a few. Even then you really don?t see minorities showcased. Of course, we now promote to anyone and everyone,? says Savigne. She adds they still offer special travel showcases for the LGBT community.

The duo books more than 300 group and individual trips a year and generates more than $45,000 annually in commission revenues. ?The CruiseOne organization is like a family. Their people are very informative and very supportive,? says Savigne. Besides, it is one of the top franchise businesses that can be run from home.

Home-based franchise opportunities exist in various sectors and a wide range of businesses, from pet-sitting and house cleaning to senior care and Internet consulting services. The initial investment for an at-home franchise is often lower than a conventional franchise, anywhere in the $10,000 to $100,000 range. However, some franchises start out for as little as $3,000.

In addition to low startup costs, what makes franchises operated out of the home appealing to would-be entrepreneurs are flexible working schedules and low overhead costs. Since the franchise owner doesn?t need commercial space, at-home franchises typically require little to no inventory.

Some of the most promising home-based industries are experiencing high participation rates among minority franchise owners. Take, for instance, in-home senior care service, which is among the top franchises thanks to a growing trend toward ?aging in place,? according to IBSIS World. The $6 billion in-home senior care franchises industry has flourished in the past five years and will continue to rapidly expand through 2017. This is good news for minority franchisees, many of whom are gaining ground in this area through one of the fastest-growing senior care franchise systems in the country, Always Best Care Senior Services.

Minority owners also have a significantly high participation in maintenance and commercial cleaning service franchises operated from home, including JAN-PRO Cleaning Systems. The low cost of entry into the maintenance industry is one contributing factor, reports the National Minority Franchising Initiative.

Before you buy any home-based franchise, get full disclosure. Meaning, would-be ranchisees should thoroughly read the Franchise Disclosure Document, or FDD, which is a document that contains information franchisors must provide to franchisees by law, as regulated by the Federal Trade Commission. Of the 23 items in the FDD, pay careful attention to the earnings claim (which franchisors don?t have to provide, but that lack of disclosure may raise a red flag). What is the initial investment plus franchise fees? What are both franchisor?s and the franchisee?s obligations? Does the franchisor offer financing and/or marketing assistance? Also, look at the FDD to find out the number of franchise units, closures, and current and former franchisee names and contact information. Talk to other franchisees to solicit their feedback. To learn more, contact the International Franchise Association and the American Franchise Association.

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) ? Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez's cancer relapse and his sudden announcement that he will undergo a fourth cancer-related surgery in Cuba have thrown the country's future into question, and his designated political heir has begun trying to fill the void.

Underlining the gravity of the situation, Vice President Nicolas Maduro broke into tears on Monday at a political rally hours after Chavez flew to Havana.

"Chavez has a nation, he has all of us, and he'll have all of us forever in this battle," said Maduro, who wiped away tears while speaking to supporters. "Even beyond this life, we're going to be loyal to Hugo Chavez."

Maduro called for the president's supporters to rally behind his candidates in upcoming gubernatorial elections on Sunday, and he also inaugurated a new cable car system in a poor neighborhood. Maduro, who spoke passionately and wore the red of Chavez's socialist movement, seems set to take on a larger role as the president's chosen successor.

Chavez said for the first time on Saturday that if he suffers complications, Maduro should take over for him and should be elected president to continue his socialist movement.

Analysts say Maduro faces monumental challenges in trying to stand in for his mentor and hold together the president's diverse "Chavismo" movement, while also coping with economic problems that are weighing on the government.

Maduro may inherit political power, "but he definitely can't inherit the charisma" of Chavez, said Luis Vicente Leon, a pollster who heads the Venezuelan firm Datanalisis. He said that during his nearly 14 years in office Chavez has been the glue that has held together groups from radical leftists to moderates, as well as military factions.

Leon said it's unclear if Maduro has what it takes to hold the movement together if Chavez dies. "Internal divisions could make the revolution unstable in the future," Leon said.

Political analyst Vladimir Villegas, who has known Maduro since his adolescence, said the vice president's experience years ago as a public transit union leader will probably help him in the difficult task of mediating between different groups of Chavez allies.

Maduro is considered to belong to a radical leftist wing of Chavez's movement that is closely aligned with Cuba's communist government. But Villegas said he thinks Maduro will know how to contain his radicalism for practical purposes.

"The priority will be the preservation of political stability, for which it will be necessary to begin negotiating with internal groups and even with the opposition," said Villegas, who hosts a radio program. "This situation is going to force him to proceed with caution."

Villegas also said that Maduro will need to "hold on to the trust if the Chavista base and to neutralize the fractions that are going to bet... on him not doing well."

Before leaving for Havana early Monday, Chavez met with military commanders at the presidential palace and promoted his defense minister, Diego Molero, to the rank of admiral in chief. Chavez showed Molero and other military commanders a golden sword that once belonged to independence hero Simon Bolivar.

Holding the sword, Chavez told the officers that he fully trusts them. He also warned of potential conspiracies by enemies, both foreign and domestic.

"I'm totally sure that our homeland is safe," Chavez told them. He urged them "not to give in to intrigue."

Chavez announced that his cancer had reappeared and named Maduro as his chosen successor during a quick weekend visit to Caracas after spending 10 days in Cuba for treatment. He said he wanted to return to deliver his message to the nation, and his appearance after a prolonged absence allowed him to send a clear directive to his movement that it should follow Maduro if cancer cuts short his presidency.

Many in Venezuela have interpreted his message as indicating that he now faces long odds.

Video of his departure, played hours later on state television, showed Chavez raising a fist as he climbed the stairs alone. From top of the stairs, he waved and shouted "Long live our homeland!"

Also visible in the doorway of the plane were his eldest daughter, Rosa, and a grandson.

The 58-year-old president won re-election in October and is due to be sworn in for a new six-year term on Jan. 10. If Chavez were to die, the constitution says that new elections should be called and held within 30 days.

Chavez said on Saturday that if such new elections are held, Maduro should be elected president in his place.

In the meantime, Maduro is helping to lead a government with serious economic problems including a swelling budget deficit and a currency that has a rapid drop in black market trading.

The vice president is also actively campaigning ahead of this weekend's state elections, telling supporters on Monday that when casting ballots "we're there with Chavez."

Chavez plans to undergo his third operation to remove cancerous tissue in about a year and a half. An initial surgery for a pelvic abscess in June 2011 helped reveal he had cancer. He has also undergone chemotherapy and radiation treatments.

Chavez said in July that tests showed he was cancer-free. But he had recently reduced his public appearances and on Nov. 27 returned to Cuba saying he would undergo hyperbaric oxygen treatment. Such treatment is regularly used to help heal tissues damaged by radiation treatment.

He said that while in Cuba tests found a return of "some malignant cells" in the same area where tumors were previously removed. Chavez said he will undergo surgery in the coming days, but it's not clear how soon.

As Chavez arrived in Havana in the early morning darkness, he received a typical welcome from Cuban President Raul Castro, who hugged him and smiled for the cameras.

But he also received a last-minute visit from Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa, who flew to Cuba on Monday.

"He has a very grave health problem," Correa told reporters at Havana's international airport. "We came to give him a hug in the name of the Ecuadorean people. ... He is not alone."

Things to Consider When You Are Going Sailing

One of the best ways to enjoy the holiday season is to go sailing. You can either hire a houseboat or a yacht. The boat will somewhat be like your RV, the only difference is you're going to be traveling on water rather than on land. If you're planning to set sail anytime soon, here are some things to consider before contacting a boat rental company.

1. How much will it cost?

Like most getaways, the cost of a houseboat or yacht charters depend on the number of people going and the size of the boat. If you are a little out of budget, invite a number of friends to come along with you. This way you can split the rental fee to make it more affordable to you.

2. Why should I go?

Houseboating and chartering yachts are now becoming a popular form of recreation among different people of all ages who are looking for fun, excitement or relaxation. So, if you need to have a break from all the stress at work and at home or if you can't resist the idea of a water adventure, sailing is a breath of fresh air for you.

3. What should I bring?

Generally, rental companies provide all the furnishings and tools needed to give you the best experience ever. Ask for an inventory list of all the tools and equipment in the boat that you're renting. This will let you know the things that are not provided for by the company such as kitchen utensils, sheets, bedding, blankets, bath towels etc. Then make your own list of all the things that you will need to bring.

4. Why is sailing better than my other vacation options?

Sailing is like a camping trip with a twist. If you are looking for relaxation, what else could be more relaxing than tranquil waters? If you are an adventurous type of person, island hopping, snorkeling and parasailing are just among the many things that you could try while you're on vacation.

5. I don't know how to sail. What should I do?

You can either hire a skipper or learn the ropes to be your boat's own captain. The rental company will give you an orientation about navigation and safety instructions before you set sail. You will learn everything from starting and steering to anchoring and navigating the boat, plus, other special instructions like how to use the radio, toilets, hot tub, water slide and barbecue grill. The key is to listen really carefully, take down notes and everything will turn out perfectly.

If you want to have the ultimate holiday experience, visit the CCY website at www.ccy.com.au and find out how you can charter a yacht. You can also click on this link http://www.ccy.com.au/airlie/ to know more.

US-led coalition: US doctor rescued from Taliban

(AP) ? An American doctor abducted by the Taliban five days ago was rescued Sunday in eastern Afghanistan, the U.S.-led military coalition said.

Dr. Dilip Joseph was captured by Taliban insurgents Wednesday outside the Afghan capital, in the Sarobi district of Kabul province.

He was rescued in an early morning operation ordered after intelligence showed that the doctor was in imminent danger of injury or possible death, according to a statement.

"This was a combined operation of U.S. and Afghan forces," said 1st Lt. Joseph Alonso, a spokesman for U.S. forces in Afghanistan. "Information was collected through multiple intelligence sources, which allowed Afghan and coalition forces to identify the location of Joseph and the criminals responsible for his captivity."

Gen. John Allen, the top commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, said the joint force planned, rehearsed and successfully conducted the operation.

"Thanks to them, Dr. Joseph will soon be rejoining his family and loved ones," Allen said.

The statement did not say where Joseph is from, or whether he was harmed in captivity.

No other details of the rescue operation were immediately available.

The Family: Mothers as Nurturers - Lyndon Hensley's blog

?Mothers are primarily responsible for the nurture of their children?

~ The Family: A Proclamation to the World

My favorite quotes?, regarding mothers:

?Motherhood is near to divinity. It is the highest, holiest service to be assumed by mankind. It places her who honors its holy calling and service next to the angels.? ~The First Presidency

Elder Richard G. Scott said,

??Satan had unleashed a seductive campaign to undermine the sanctity of womanhood, to deceive the daughters of God and divert them from their divine destiny. He well knows women are the compassionate, self-sacrificing, loving power that binds together the human family?.He has convinced many of the lie that they are third-class citizens in the kingdom of God. That falsehood has led some to trade their divinely given femininity for male coarseness.?

Sister Beck said,?

?Who will prepare this righteous generation of sons and daughters? Latter-day Saint women will do this ? women who know and love the Lord and bear testimony of Him, women who are strong and immovable and who do not give up during difficult and discouraging times.? This really impressed me. It also showed me the significance it is of my divine role of being a mother and nurturer.?

?There is no more noble work than that of a good and God-fearing mother.? ??but she who rears successfully a family of healthy, beautiful sons and daughters, whose influence will be felt through generations to come?deserves the highest honor that man can give, and the choicest blessings of God.? ?I think that this is an important thing for women to understand. The women of the world today are confused about their roles and are fulfilling careers and working outside the home.?

I liked President Benson?s words when he said, ?Mothers who help families pray and play together will stay together and will bless children?s lives forever.?

President Benson talked about the widows and mothers who for various reasons need to work outside the home and support themselves, and said, ?But these instances are the exception, not the rule.? I think still too often even women of the church want think that this means it is perfectly acceptable to have a career. Whereas I don?t think it is necessarily wrong, I still think a woman should be in the home raising and loving her children and ready to be at hand to them.?

To those who have not yet married or had children or who cannot have children:

Sister Sheri Dew has not had the chance to marry nor have children. She is a big example to me of a righteous sister in Zion. Side note, one of my absolute favorite books is by her called, ?No One Can Take Your Place.? Such a good read!! Back to motherhood here are some of her words:

?both God the Father and Adam called Eve ?the mother of all living? ? and they did so before she ever bore a child?.It is the essence of who were are as women. It defines our very identity, our divine stature and nature, and the unique traits our Father gave us.??

?Every one of us can show by word and by deed that the work of women in the Lord?s kingdom is magnificent and holy. I repeat: We are all mothers in Israel, and our calling is to love and help lead the rising generation through the dangerous streets of mortality.??

Jimi Manuwa vs. Cyrille Diabate Set For UFC on FUEL TV 7 In London, England

An exciting stand-up battle between two clinical strikers has been added to UFC on FUEL TV 7, as English light heavyweight Jimi Manuwa (pic) will collide with French veteran Cyrille Diabate when the UFC hits the Wembley Arena in London, on February 16th, 2012.

32 year old Jimi "Poster Boy" Manuwa (12-0) put in a star making performance during his UFC debut, when he repeatedly lit up the face of Kyle Kingsbury back in September, forcing a doctor to call an end to the bout at the end of round two. The win also saw the vicious striker continue his streak of finishing every fight in his career so far. The unbeaten prospect is a former champion of English promotion UCMMA, and defended the 205lb title five times in just over two years.

39 year old Cyrille "The Snake" Diabate (19-8-1) is a veteran of the sport who has spent time with promotions such as DEEP, Cage Rage and PRIDE. The former kickboxer has been with the UFC since 2010, and strung together a very solid 4-2 record in the light heavyweight division, scoring notable wins over Luiz Cane and Steve Cantwell. Most recently the Team Quest fighter tapped out Chad Griggs in the first round at UFC 154.

Here is the current line-up for UFC on FUEL TV 7.

External Hard Drive to Apple TV 3?

Answers (above) to your (OPs) questions are correct. It sounds like you are wanting a solution that unchains your computer from the equation but still works. Think server instead of hard drive. If the server can run iTunes, it can get you pretty close to what you want.

If you have some old computer that you are no longer using, it can be your "server" (if it can run iTunes). If not, you could buy a cheap windows machine (even a used one to get the price low) and dedicate it to this purpose.

OR, consider going with something else (TV like) such as the WD device that allows local storage of your choosing.

China vows to narrow $10B tech trade deficit

China's contracted value of technology imports far exceeded its technology exports last year, resulting in a deficit of more than US$10 billion. The Chinese government has pledged to help narrow the gap by boosting exports and enhancing intellectual property protection in the sector.

Zhou Liujun, director-general of the Department of Trade at the Ministry of Commerce, said the contracted value of China's imported technology products grew 25.5 percent year-on-year to hit US$32.16 billion in 2011, while technology exports clocked US$21.4 billion, China Daily reported Friday. This amounted to a deficit of US$10.76 billion.

"Chinese companies are changing from technology importers to exporters, and the country's technology exports have entered a fast-growing phase," observed Zhou, who was speaking at a press conference to promote the upcoming China International Technology Fair to be held in Shanghai in May next year.

He pointed out the lasting deficit in China's technology trade is rooted in the country's strong demand for high technology as it shifts from a "made-in-China" model to a "created-in-China" model.?This makes it near impossible to reach a balance in the short term by reducing technology imports, he noted.?"We should concentrate on the structural balance of technology trade. Imported technology is urgently needed for our manufacturing sector and can save costs in research and development."

But the official also pointed out China had made important technology advances in the past decades and had "great potential for export". According to the Chinese government, the contracted value of technology exports grew from US$580 million in 2006 to last year's US$21.4 billion.

Zhou said China is aiming to increase exports of its IT products in order to narrow the US$10 billion tech trade deficit, as the country improves its manufacturing sector and restructures its economic growth.

Its tech exports last year comprised mainly computer software, which accounted for 89.2 percent of overall volume, as well as technology consulting and services and licensing of proprietary technology, the China Daily report said.

According to Zhou, technology trade accounted for 12 percent of China's services trade over the recent years, reflecting strong potential for expansion. He added the upcoming Shanghai fair would allow technology buyers and suppliers to meet, and also provided an opportunity to break technology barriers imposed by developed economies.

The report also noted during his meeting Wednesday with former U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, Henry Paulson, Chinese Vice-Premier Li Keqiang urged the U.S. to loosen restrictions on high-technology exports to China as soon as possible.

Last May, at the Sino-U.S. dialogue, current U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said the U.S. will soon take substantial action to?ease export controls to China, which currently stand at over 2,400 restrictions. Before the dialogue took place, the U.S. was considering exporting commercial satellite technology, but China was not on the buyers list.

In October, however, the U.S. House of Representatives Intelligence Committee issued a report arguing that Chinese networking equipment vendors, specifically Huawei and ZTE, posed national security threats to the country. It urged U.S. companies against working with the Chinese vendors. China's commerce ministry later voiced its objection to the U.S. report, describing it as "subjective guesswork".?

Meanwhile, the Chinese government also said it would improve efforts in promoting and protecting intellectual property, and set up an IPR (intellectual property rights) alert mechanism to resolve disputes in the technology trade.

A technology evaluation system is also in a pilot stage, according to Cao Donggen, deputy director-general of the patent administration department at China's State Intellectual Property Office, the report added.
