"Hacking for Sustainability" at ICT4S Conference | World Resources ...

Zurich, 5 December 2012?Registration for the "ICT4S" international conference on the role of Information and Communication Technologies, to be held in Zurich, 14-15 February, 2013, is now open. The World Resources Forum is one of the organising partners and will organise a pre-event on February 13.

The program also includes a Green Hackaton ("one day hacking for sustainability"), as well as the launch of the SECO/Empa?program on sustainable recycling industries.

ICT4S is?a joint initiative of academia, industry, national and international organisations to take stock of the role of??Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in energy efficiency and sustainable development. Questions the conference will discuss are how we can use ICT for making our world more sustainable, and how ICT can be used for creating more added value from less physical input, aiming at increasing quality of life for all without compromising future generations? ability to?meet their needs.?

The conference brings together leading researchers, developers and decision-makers from academia, politics and business to take stock of ICT?s role in sustainability. By providing an arena for interdisciplinary and critical reflection, the conference will help to improve the methodologies for evaluating, developing, and governing the effects of ICT systems on the sustainability of complex societal and environmental systems, says General Conference Chair Lorenz Hilty.?

Some 42 speakers from 27 countries will present their submitted papers that have been selected by an?international program committee. Posters, a number of workshops (including a PhD students workshop) will be organised, as well as a "Green IT" crash course?and a "Green Hackathon". hacking?

  • Marko Turpeinen, Center for Sustainable Communications, KTH, Stockholm, on "Data-Driven Resource Management"
  • Jean-Marc Pierson, Universit? de Toulouse, on "Energy Consumption from a Software Perspective"
  • Daniel Spreng, ETH Z?rich, on "Interactions between Energy, Information and Growth".
